JANUARY Art Fix: Upcoming Events

If you need your art fix for the month of January (and I know I do!), here are some shows that you won't want to miss. This is the first art walk of 2013! Come see what your favourite local artists and craftsmen have been cooking up over the holidays!

Jeffrey Simmons, "Palindrome III" @ Greg Kucera
TONIGHT! The 1st Thursday Art Walk in Pioneer Square, Thursday, 3 January from 5-8pm. Check out the watercolour views of microscopia by Jeffrey Simmons at the Greg Kucera Gallery! You also won't want to miss the surreal portraiture of Samnation at the OK Gallery, Justin Colt Beckman's civil war inspired photography at Punch Gallery, and more! Pioneer Square is the oldest art walk in the United States, and features over 50 galleries, studios, and other art spaces!

Jesse Link @ Portage Bay Goods
The 1st Friday Art Walk in Fremont, Friday, 4 January from 6-9pm. You won't want to miss the Saturn Building, a multi-level art experience! Featured artists: Annette Lusher (2nd floor lobby), Made Sumaradana (3rd floor), Lezel Herrin (4th floor), and Sean McFayden (5th floor). Space is hosting the varied and colourful works of artists ZEE, Shelly K, and Mollie Bryan. Bellefleur Lingerie has the boudoir photography of Cheryl Jones, and Jesse Link's surreal paintings have taken over Portage Bay Goods!

Braden Duncan, "Timelapse" @ Red Raven Gallery
The 1st Saturday Art Walk in Port Townsend, Saturday, 5 January from 5-8.30pm. Come see "The Muse" at Red Raven Gallery in Port Townsend, featuring me (Braden Duncan) and my "Mechanical Aviary" watercolours as well as the ethereal photography of Jason Starr Squire. Opening reception: Saturday, 5 January from 5.30-8.30pm, part of the Port Townsend Art Walk!

The 2nd Thursday Art Walk in Capitol Hill, Thursday, 10 January from 5-9pm. Don't miss "Dystopia 2013" at True Love Gallery! Dystopia is a community or society, usually fictional, that is in some way undesirable or frightening. It is the opposite of a utopia. Such societies appear in many works of fiction, particularly in stories set in a speculative future. Featured artists: 13 fingrs, me (Braden Duncan), Brian K. Ward, Chris J. Olson, Chris Sheridan, Crystal Barbre, Cultura, Joe Vollan, Kyle Abernethy, Larkin, Levi Hastings, Michael Albanese, tnglr, Xavier Lopez Jr, and Yvette Endrijautski.

The Cloud Gallery at Frame Central is featuring unique creations of Yvette Endrijautzki, Corey Urlacher, and Kat Houseman! Come see new work at Bauhaus Coffee, Blindfold Gallery, Boom Noodle, Cupcake Royale, High 5 Pie, Joe Bar, Laughing Buddha, Online Cafe, Retrofit Home, True Love Gallery, Vermillion, and more!

"Transmission" at the Mercury, Thursday, 10 January from 9.30pm til late. You do not have to be a member for this night, and you do not need a member to sign you in. It is open to the public. No dress code. Free for members before 9.30pm. Starts at 9pm and goes til 2am. The performer will go on around 10.30 and again at 11.30, and the artist will be there all night. Come buy art, drinks, hear music and watch a sexy lady dance. "Transmission" happens the 2nd Thursday of every month.

The 2nd Thursday Art Walk in West Seattle, Thursday, 10 January from 6-9pm. The Twilight Artist Collective welcomes brand new owners Tracy Cilona and Christine Heidel! Get to know the new owners of Twilight at the January show. Both Christine and Tracy will be exhibiting their work including photography, mixed media, embroidery and jewelry. Also check out new work at The Heartland Cafe, Hotwire Coffee, Shoofly Pie, and more!

The 2nd Friday Art Walk in the Greenwood-Phinney neighbourhood, Friday, 11 January from 6-9pm. Don't miss the encore opening of "Hybrid Contortions: Art of the Fantastical & 3-Dimensional" at Urban Light Studios! Curated by me (Braden Duncan) and Zachary Sofia, this delightfully twisted show features work by a dozen local artists who have a flair for the dramatic, an eye for texture, and a tendency toward the 3-dimensional.

It's also the encore opening of "Gifted 3: A Holiday Group Show" at Tasty Delectable Collectibles, featuring fine art for under $200 and a huge selection of handmade and one-of-a-kind gifts for under $100. Catch a fantastic deal on unique local art while you can!

#TRACKSTARS @ Bherd Studios
Bherd is featuring a brand new show this month! "New End: Dangerous Times" is a completely immersive, multi-media installation by Dylan Neuwirth & Jeff Gerber (a.k.a. Raven) under their new moniker #TRACKSTARS. The artists have created an environment that addresses our modern day angsts and how we communicate. While social media has allowed us to communicate to a much broader audience, it has also clearly driven us away from focusing on things that are most present in our lives, like the people around us and the experiences that we have with them. The show runs through 1 February.

Also see new and exciting work at Full Circle, EchoEcho, Naked City Brewery, Gainsbourg, Two Bird Tattoo, Chocolatti, and more!

The 2nd Friday Art Walk in Belltown, Friday, 11 January from 6-9pm. Roq la Rue is hosting "I'll Love You 'Til The End Of The World", themed around the idea of evaded apocalypse and the hope for the future and melancholy for what mankind has already wrought. The idea for the show came from musician Nick Cave's song of the same title, which was also offered to the artists as an inspiration jump off point. Featured artists: Camille Rose Garcia, Chris Berens, Eric Fortune, Jane Kenoyer, Jean-Pierre Roy, John Brophy, John Brosio, Laurie Lee Brom, Marco Mazzoni, Martin Wittfooth, Nicola Verlato, Sail, Sarah Dolby, and Scott Musgrove.

Jim Dixon @ Venue
The 2nd Saturday Art Walk in Ballard, Saturday, 12 January from 6-9pm. Venue is featuring "American Automata" by Jim Dixon, a collection of mechanical kinetic sculptures designed to tell stories! Don't miss new work at Annie's Art & Frame, Art & Soul, Blowing Sands Glass Studio, Cupcake Royal, Filthy Rich, Habitude, Kiss Cafe, Monster Art & Clothing, Nightingale Gallery, Savour, the Sunset Tavern and more!

The 2nd Saturday Art Walk in the Central District, Saturday, 12 January from 1-5pm. Check out the Neptune Gallery Sculpture Garden and new work at Atelier Autumnthing, Hi-Spot Cafe, Pratt Fine Art Centre, Twilight Exit and more!

The 2nd Saturday Art Walk in Georgetown, Saturday 12 January from 6-9pm. Nautilus Studios will be showcasing Ego and JP Farquar! And check out Cheesemongers next door if you have the chance. More than 40 other local businesses also take part in the Edmonds art walk.

"The Magic of Carnevale" at Gargoyles Statuary

The 3rd Friday Art Walk in the University District, Friday, 18 January from 6-9pm. Gargoyles Statuary presents the Magic of Carnevale, featuring Daniel McManus and Lady Lygeia. Also check out new work at Artist & Craftsman, BC Surf & Sport, Cafe Allegro, Chaco Canyon Cafe, Solstice Cafe, Starbucks and more! Don't forget to stop by Boulevard Grocery for a bag of fresh-roasted coffee hand-painted by a local Seattle artist!

"Blackout Media, Furniture Girls, & Strong Suit" at the Sunset Tavern, featuring the art of Derek Ross. Opening reception: Saturday, 19 January from 9pm til close.

City Arts and Blue Moon present the "Art Walk Awards: People's Choice" on Thursday, January 24th at 1927 Events in downtown Seattle. Awards will be $1,250 to the first place winner, $500 to the second place winner and $250 to the third place winners. Ten total finalists will be eligible for these awards. Nine finalists were selected by City Arts and the hosting galleries that participate in the Art Walk Consortium. One People's Choice finalist will be selected by you from the slideshow below, which features one nomination per artist from the Art Walk Consortium galleries. Click here to vote!

Casey Brookbush at the Elliot Bay Brewing Company. Come see Casey's brand new pop culture portraits from 2013 as well as a select set of archival favourites! Opening reception: Saturday, 26 January from 7-11pm.

With this much going on, you couldn't possibly complain that there's nothing to do in Seattle!

Support your local art scene! Cheers.
