MARCH Art Fix: Upcoming Events

If you need your art fix for the month of March (and I know I do!), here are some shows that you won't want to miss. Spring is coming, and the turn of the season means warmer weather, brighter colours, and creative inspiration all around! It's also Comicon month, so embrace your inner costumed crusader, and revel in Seattle's annual tribute to classic comic culture.


Emerald City Comicon! Friday-Sunday, 1-3 March at the Convention Centre in Downtown Seattle. The largest comic book and pop culture convention in the Northwest features celebrity guests, renowned artists, games, gear, and costumes galore! Dress up as your favourite comic character, get an autograph from Adam West, Carrie Fisher, Felicia Day, or Sir Patrick Stewart, and support some local talent as well. A few featured local artists include: Augie Pagan, Brom, Chris Sheridan, Cori Dietsch, Echo Chernik, Matthew Hinshaw, Raven Mimura, Travis Talburt, and many, many more!



ECCC Live Art Event! Friday, 1 March from 9pm-late at the Baltic Room on Capitol Hill. If you dig dancing, drinking, and watching art happen, you'll love this! Come see some of your favourite comic book artists (including David Mack, Carl Faulkner and Redd Walitzki) create amazing works of art as you watch! There will be a DJ and models to be used as live canvases. The event is officially endorsed by the Emerald City Comicon, and the art created will be donated to the ECCC auction that benefits Children's Hospital. 21+, no cover, and open to the public.


Don't miss the "Hawken Art Attack" at Vermillion! The gallery take over is Comicon weekend, 1-3 March! Yet another awesome offshoot of the Emerald City Comicon, the Hawken show will feature work from internationally known artists such as Khang Le and Camilla di'Errico, as well as work from local Seattle artists including Dear Earthling, Jeremiah Hammer, and Jeff "Weirdo" Jacobson! 


"Mint Condition Issue #2" at the Ltd Gallery, opening reception Friday, 1 March from 7-11pm. The Ltd's second annual comic book inspired art show features the talents of Augie Pagan, Carl Faulkner, Chris J Olson, Levi Hastings, Mike Capp, tnglr, Wednesday Wolf, and many more! With live music by DJ Hojo!

Matt Bazemore, "Waterlilies" @ Saturn

The 1st Friday Art Walk in Fremont, Friday, 1 March from 6-9pm. Bellefleur Lingerie is showing the paintings of Therese de Alwese. The Evo Timesinfinity Gallery is partnering with Powder Magazine for a charity fundraiser to sell some of their most iconic covers from the past 40 years. Frame Up Studios is featuring the black and white photography of Roy Burbank. Pel'Meni Dumpling Tzar is featuring the work of Luke Forsyth. Saturn has five artists on five floors this month: Lauren Aldrich, Bryan Ubaghs, Matt Bazemore, and Jaclyn Miller; and Space has Angie Hihn, Annette Lusher, and Bill Matthews this month.

Laura Cameron, "Dark Matter" @ Northwest Visions Studio

Northwest Visions Studio - Open studio party! Friday, 1 March from 8-10pm. Live music, wine, snacks, and the fantastical mythologically-inspired art of Laura Cameron!

Patricia Ariel @ Red Raven Gallery

The 1st Saturday Art Walk in Port Townsend, Saturday, 2 March from 5-8.30pm. Come see "Mythologique" the amazing and ethereal mixed media work of Patricia Ariel at Red Raven Gallery. Take a walk down Water Street and check out new work at Earthenworks Gallery, Forest Gems Gallery, Gallery 9, Northwind Arts Alliance, Port Townsend Gallery, Simon Mace Gallery, Williams Gallery, and more! If you get hungry along the way, stop into Elevated Ice Cream, Nifty Fifty's Diner, Water Street Creperie, or Cellar Door (the newly opened brainchild of local food fiends Dominic Svornich and Stephanie Hoch).



If you haven't been to Inscape Arts yet, this Sunday would be the perfect time to check it out! Across the street from Uwajimaya in the former INS Building, Inscape is a collaboration of over 150 artists, artisans, and professionals with the intention of engaging the community, respecting culture, preserving history, and celebrating the arts. In addition to the 1st Thursday art walks, Inscape will be hosting four large events each year. The first is the "Spring Arts Festival", Sunday, 3 March from noon-6pm, and features music, performances, demos and exhibitions that showcase local creative talent.

"Introductions" @ SAM

The 1st Thursday Art Walk in Pioneer Square, Thursday, 7 March from 5-8pm. If you're passing through Downtown on the way, come see "Introductions" at SAM, featuring work by a group of Northwest artists who are brand new to the SAM Gallery: Carolyn Hopkins, Casey Curran, Chris Sheridan, David Hytone, Glenn Tramantano, Jo Moniz, Kimberly Clark, Peggy Washburn, and Serene Greene.


SAM is also hosting the "Characters of Kenwood House" masterpieces by Gainsborough, Hals, Rembrandt, Reynolds, Romney, Turner, Van Dyck, and more! Show runs through 19 May.



Don't miss "Convergence" at the OK Gallery with new work from Jameson S. Hubbard, Josh Pemberton, and Lowell Poisson. "One on One" featuring Marija Vermeulen and Guido Nieuwendijk, and "Pair/Pare" featuring Serrah Russell and Jason Hirata are opening at SOIL this month! "Telephone" @ Bherd Studios

It's ArtUp and ChowDown night at the 2nd Friday Art Walk in the Greenwood-Phinney neighbourhood, Friday, 8 March from 6-9pm. Bherd Studios and HomeSuite Home are teaming up this month to feature a fun new show. Did you ever play 'Telephone' when you were little? Well, imagine instead of passing on a phrase, you're responding to a concept, and you're doing it with art supplies! "Telephone" asked 22 local artists to interpret 6 conceptual threads based on work passed on to them from the previous artists. Artists include Augie Pagan, Carlos Aguilar, Chris Sheridan, Crystal Barbre, EGO, Joe Vollan, John Osgood, Larkin, Levi Hastings, Siolo Thompson and more!



Don't miss "Monsters & Mash-Ups featuring Twisted Toys" at Tasty, opening reception Friday, 8 March from 6-10pm! If you've ever wanted a creepy doll, you won't find a better place than Tasty! Especially with the talents of these artists on the line: Amos, Rei, Rob, Tim and Wilky from FUNKO, as well as Andre Dyrdahl, Billy Wack, Chris Looney, Eli Wolff, Jim Koch, Krista Jefferson, Marty Gordon, Michele Lynch, Mike Martin, and Stephen Grace.


EchoEcho is hosting "Solitude," art in the key of lonely. Also check out "Urban Avant Garde" at Urban Light Studios, featuring over 50 artists and musicians in a revolving open mic style art event. Contributing artists include Chris J Olson, Jonathan Wakuda Fischer, Narboo, Starhead Boy, tnglr, Xavier Lopez Jr, and more! There's new and exciting work at Chocolatti, Full Circle, Gainsbourg, Naked City Brewery, and Two Bird Tattoo as well, so make a night of it, and step out for good food and good art!


"Guerrilla Girls" @ Form/Space Atelier



The 2nd Friday Art Walk in Belltown doesn't officially start until April, but there are a few venues with shows worth seeing before then! Friday, 8 March from 6-9pm. Form/Space Atelier is featuring "The Posers: Gorilla Girls on Tour," an exhibit of feminist-themed posters with vernissage to coincide with International Women's Day March 8. 'In 1985, a group of women artists founded the Guerrilla Girls. They assumed the names of dead women artists and wore gorilla masks in public, concealing their identities and focusing on the issues rather than their personalities. Between 1985 and 2000, close to 100 women, working collectively and anonymously, produced posters, billboards, public actions, books and other projects to make feminism funny and fashionable. At the turn of the millennium, three separate and independent incorporated groups formed to bring fake fur and feminism to new frontiers.' (from www.guerrillagirls.com). The 2nd Saturday Art Walk in Georgetown, Saturday 9 March from 6-9pm. "Masks, Marionettes & Mechanical Birds" by me (Braden Duncan) is migrating to American Pie this month! LxWxH Gallery is hosting "Catch & Release" a group show about sculpture and the body by artists Jana Brevick, Dorothy Cheng, Kimber Leblicq, and Tara Brannigan. LxWxH also has a brand new subscription box set called "de/Construct." Boxes by Steve Leroux, featuring small paintings by Claire Johnson, Joey Bates, and writing by Mimi Allin! Founded and curated by Sharon Arnold, LxWxH is an art-by-mail subscription project that includes original art and literature intended to 'bring people together and collect art in an affordable and approachable way' (from www.lengthbywidthbyheight.com). This year marks the 20th Anniversary of Magic: The Gathering, the epic card game, and Krab Jab Studios is hosting "The Gathering" featuring illustrators of Magic cards including Julie Baroh, Mark Tedin,and Heather Hudson! "Transmission" at the Mercury, Thursday, 14 March from 9.30pm til late. You do not have to be a member for this night, and you do not need a member to sign you in. It is open to the public. No dress code. Free for members before 9.30pm. Starts at 9pm and goes til 2am. The performer will go on around 10.30 and again at 11.30, and the artist will be there all night. Come buy art, drinks, hear music and watch a sexy lady dance. "Transmission" happens the 2nd Thursday of every month.

The 2nd Thursday Art Walk in West Seattle, Thursday, 14 March from 6-9pm. The Twilight Gallery & Boutique is hosting "What's Old is New," a group show featuring Twilight artists, past and present. Stop by and kick it with DJ Never Leaves, and ask poet Matthew Rowe to write a few lines about you! Also check out new work at the The Heartland Cafe, Hotwire Coffee, Shoofly Pie, Windermere, and more!

"From the Shadows & Mechanical Aviary" @ Gargoyles

The 3rd Friday Art Walk in the University District, Friday, 15 March from 6-9pm. Gargoyles Statuary is featuring literary inspired work by Jeffrey Shaw and brand new "Mechanical Aviary" pieces by me (Braden Duncan). If you've ever wanted a wind-up penguin, this is your chance! Also check out new work at BC Surf & Sport, Cafe Allegro, Cafe Solstice, Lucid Gallery, Starbucks, Trabant Coffee & Chai and more! Don't forget to stop by Boulevard Grocery for a bag of fresh-roasted coffee hand-painted by a local Seattle artist!

Braden Duncan, "Kitsune (detail)" @ Otherworlds

The 3rd Thursday Art Walk in Edmonds, Thursday, 21 March from 5-8pm. Come see "Clockwork Fairyland" at Otherworlds, featuring (my) Braden Duncan's "Faerie Tales" as well as a new series of mechanical winged insects! In addition to the art walk, Otherworlds regularly hosts fun and exciting steampunk/gamer/geek/sci-fi/fantasy/gothic/horror-themed events! Cheesemongers is right next door if you find yourself in need of something delicious, and you can check out new work at ARTspot, Arts Now, C'est La Vie, The Papery, Red Petal Cakes, Stunningly Strange Gallery, and more than 30 other Edmonds art spaces!

"The New Neo-Naturalists" at the CoCA, opening reception Thursday, 21 March from 5-9pm. Features new work from Northwest artists David Eisenhour, Lisa Gilley, and Sean Yearian. The Neo-Naturalist manifesto: 'We the new neo-naturalists do hereby declare: Our god the natural world is one with us as evidenced by our DNA connecting us to the first life on earth 3.5 billion years ago. Biology is our religion. We pledge: To continue to evolve that we may escape the fate of our bacterial ancestors in this petri dish we call earth. Our allegiance to the life system of this planet. The Frye Art Museum is showcasing two different exhibits this month. "Chamber Music" is a 36-artist response to the poetry of James Joyce. Curated by Scott Lawrimore, it features the work of Bonnie Biggs, Greg Lundgren, Jaq Chartier, Joey Veltkamp, Julie Alexander, Robert Campbell, Serrah Russell, Sharon Arnold, and more! Show runs through 5 May. Also featured are over 50 paintings and drawings by Nicolai Fechin, a Russian-American expressionist painter prolific at the turn of the 20th Century. Show runs through 19 May. The Frye also hosts an art lecture series every Thursday night.

The Henry Art Gallery is currently hosting three shows: "A la belle étoile (Under the Sky)," a video installation by Pipilotti Rist (through 24 March); "Now Here is Also Nowhere Part II," a series of works that pose questions about mind, body, and soul (through 5 May);  and "The Dowsing," textile objects by Anna Telcs (through 5 May).

With this much going on, you couldn't possibly complain that there's nothing to do in Seattle!
