JUNE Art Fix: Upcoming Events

If you need your art fix for the month of June (and I know I do!), here are some shows that you won't want to miss! June is Pride month, so whatever your colour, flavour, gender, orientation, denomination, genetic modification, physical alteration, societal affectation, cultural appropriation, and/or economic subjugation... be proud to be you, and support the awesomeness of your fellow humans! The weather will be nice(er), and Seattle has no shortage of beautiful places to find and make some art!

LAST CHANCE:

Ryan Molenkamp @ SAM Gallery
"Ryan Molenkamp at Taste" at the SAM Gallery. The opening event will feature sips and snacks, including a signature cocktail created specifically for the artist that will be featured on Taste's menu through the run of the show. This well-known Seattle-based artist continues his exploration of both the natural and built environments. Showing through 7 June.

Kristin Cammermeyer at Hedreen GalleryLA-based artist Kristin Cammermeyer arrives to occupy Hedreen Gallery for six weeks, from May 13-June 24, 2015. While here, she will be present and working at the gallery during regular open hours (Weds-Sat, 1:30-6 pm), building a continually-shifting, site-specific sculpture in response to the gallery’s unique environment. Cammermeyer’s process involves collecting found materials from on site or nearby and subsequent documentation of the construction and deconstruction process that follows. Recorded from a stationary position, the resulting video captures Cammermeyer’s uncanny, spontaneous, colorful transformation of the space and her thoughtful treatment of under appreciated details in our surroundings. Showing through 24 June.

COMING UP:

"Pridefest 2015" The largest free Pride festival in America! Celebrate diversity all month long with Pridefest! Culminating in the parade on Sunday, 28 June 2015 at the Seattle Center. And returning Saturday, 27 June is PrideFest Capitol Hill & Family Day. Roq la Rue
The Pioneer Square Art Walk ~ Thursday, 4 June from 5-9pm. Selected shows:
57 Biscayne - "100 Under 100" group show. One hundred works of art for under $100 a pop. Snatch up art by resident '57 Biscayne artists and lots of fabulous guests – drawings, cute tiny paintings, tintypes, photo and mixed media constructions, tin collages, fiber, and more – and take it home that very night! Thursday, June 4, 6-10 PM and then by appointment for as long as it lasts.
Artifact Gallery - Tracy Boyd, paintings. Tracy’s background in design shows itself through strong graphical influence and an ability to create visual impact through calculated chance. She purposely composes and orchestrates paintings directly on the canvas with no advance preparation or sketching in an effort to authentically and organically interpret her subjects. The subjects in this collection feel battle tested. They have shown up, stood strong, and remain to live another day.
AXIS Pioneer Square - "NineTEEN85" by Justin Kane ElderThis exhibit is Justin Kane Elder’s interpretation of his eccentric upbringing nurtured in a neo-hippie-survivalist-kung-fu-wolf-pack setting. Witness what happens when a seven year old has full access to automatic weapons and wild animals for siblings. Elder’s exhibition is a series of multi-media works that explore icons and heroes from his childhood. Visual elements such as abstraction, repetition, and scavenging are used to capture the essence of his savage youth.
Flatcolor Gallery - "Looking at You - Looking at Me" by Mark Warren Jacques.
The Piranha Shop - "Symbols of the Sacred" by Daniel Michael Viox and Amanda Ichihashi Jagerman. Opening Ceremony by Paul "Che Oke Ten" Wagner. Live Music by Amos Miller presenting "SuperSquare" Silent Auction art benefit fundraiser for Nepal!
Roq La Rue - Main Gallery: "Archive of Lost Species" by Travis Louie & "American Wilderness" by Lauren MarxLoft Gallery: Group print show from the archives.
SAM - "Rebirth of the World" by Chiho Aoshima (more info on SAM exhibits below)
SOIL
Trabant Coffee - "Post-Industrial Nostalgia" by Amelia Marsh ArtsWhen I was a kid and my parents wouldn’t buy me a teddy bear, I cried. Not because I didn’t get what I wanted, but because I had told the teddy he had a home with me and that I would keep him safe, and I had let him down. Even now, when I don’t want to give it credence, I feel a twinge: this object has a soul. A character. A vacuum tube that passed inspection in 1936. A stranger’s perfect handwriting. Lost glasses, smashed headphones, half of a lawn ornament. Keys, oh so many keys to doors I will never find. They are tiny mysteries and tiny kindnesses: finding homes for abandoned objects. I pick them up.

Casey Weldon @ Spoke Art
"Tropefiend" by Casey Weldon at Spoke Art in San Francisco. Opening reception: Saturday, 6 June from 6-10pm. If you're in the San Franciso area, check out Seattle artist Casey Weldon's solo show! Returning for his third solo at the gallery, “Tropefiend” is an extensive exploration into Weldon’s stylized world, resulting in a surreal display of subtle wit and strange beauty. Consisting of new paintings, Weldon’s latest body of work delves into contemporary themes such as metaphysical existence and our unnatural connection to and modern relationship with nature. Utilizing elements of glowing and bioluminescent subjects, Weldon explains that his work has developed to understand a larger concept of longevity, marked by this kind of illuminated aesthetic. “I think on one hand, the color palette I work with has been gradually getting darker, and I was getting really into recreating the glowing and reflecting colors of bright lights. The subject matter has been more about dying man made media, like television, radio, and print, and having them lost in the overgrowth of the constant of nature. It's more natural than magical. Maybe supernatural” explains the artist. Showing through 27 June.

The exhibition will be on view for one night only at The Factory before moving to the Kinsey Gallery on Seattle University’s campus.
Ghost Gallery - "Three-Fold" by Elizabeth Arzani, Carmen Neely & Krisna Schumann. “Three-Fold” aims to create interpretive dialogue between pairings of artworks. While all three artists have a similar background rooted in painting, each artist manipulates and combines different media with a distinctly different intent and purpose. The works chosen utilize painting, collage and assemblage to demonstrate dynamic sexual, poetic and nostalgic comparisons. Each work of art simultaneously stands by itself, and becomes an essential element to the pair. The result is an electric, unexpected collection of work.

Saint John's Bar - "Prophesy of the Goldfinch" by Evan Amarante Soares. His latest silkscreen poster series, Prophecy of the Goldfinch, is an experiment in illustrative storytelling that draws subject matter from an imagined mythology of his own creation and the incomplete odyssey of an unnamed goldfinch-like creature. Katrina del Mar @ Twilight
The West Seattle Art Walk ~ Thursday, 11 June from 6-9pm. Selected shows:
Twilight Gallery - "Feral Women" by Katrina del Mar. Artist reception: Tuesday, 9 June from 6-9pm. Katrina del Mar continues to explore the theme of wild women who break with convention, an obsession she’s had since childhood. The wildness in women, sometimes overt, sometimes subtle is, for del Mar, a manifestation of innate inestimable power and therefore a source of the divine. Large scale, hi octane, full color, super-saturated photographs could be scenes from forgotten, fantastic films. The high hard femme, the bad girl, the rocker, the biker, the surfer-selkie, are icons of a new feminist pantheon.

Enter a new mask—one for the 21st century: it’s startling and joyful but also serious and menacing. When our experiences become difficult or curious, how do we confront what can’t be explained? One option is to shake it out by adopting disguises and staging a masquerade. Contemporary artists from Africa and of African descent explore this impulse by filling the galleries with inventive avatars and provocative new myths, taking us on mysterious journeys through city streets and futuristic landscapes.

ONGOING:

Chiho Aoshima @ SAAM

The SAAM is currently featuring:
"Rebirth of the World" by Chiho Aoshima. (2 May - 4 October) Welcome to the fantastic world of Chiho Aoshima. This might just be our future. Who’s to say that as technology advances, as natural disasters rise, as the organic world blends with the manmade, that smartphones will not become smart buildings? That skyscrapers will not stand up and walk among mountains? That ghosts and spirits don’t already float through our world? Aoshima’s work has undeniably dark images but a positive attitude. There’s no evidence of fear in her art. Her murals, digital prints, and drawings don’t want to escape from society or from the future. Instead, she seems to embrace all possibilities, including a world where the skeletons and ghosts reside alongside the rest of us. Her work may look like a surreal fantasy. But ask Aoshima, and she’ll tell you she’s showing us the reality that our beautifully chaotic world may be hurtling toward.
"Conceal/Reveal: Making Meaning in Chinese Art" (20 December 2014 - 21 June 2015) This exhibition shows that Chinese artists traditionally employ different approaches to construct layered meanings in an indirect but intriguing way: using one motif to represent another, either through their literary associations or shared pronunciations (homophones); playing with mediums such as using contemporary ceramics to imitate ancient lacquerware; or the pretext of metaphors to make social or political commentaries. This purposeful layering by the artist invites the viewer to mentally peel the layers and reveal the embedded meanings.

The SAM is currently featuring:
"Place" by John Armstrong, Mel Curtis & Jennifer Stanton. Where we live, where we've come from, and where we choose to be all help inform our daily experiences and our sense of place in the world. John Armstrong says that his photos "show some of the irony, humor and weirdness of what it's like living in America today." Mel Curtis travels the world – at times with University of Washington student groups – and will have new images based on those travels. Jennifer Stanton's new work "is a series of Acacia trees, which easily lead the mind to the continent of Africa."

"Serious Games" by Harun Farocki (19 March - 12 July). German filmmaker Harun Farocki’s four-part video installation Serious Games examines the way we use technology and simulation to prepare American soldiers for missions in the Middle East and Afghanistan and to debrief them after returning from active duty. Filmed at different army training centers in the U.S., the work presents us with four scenarios where the line between reality and fiction becomes disconcertingly blurred. By charting the seamless integration of computer-simulated environments into training programs—and the substitution of a virtual environment for the real and the real for the virtual—Farocki forcefully impresses on the viewer our emotional and psychological investment in the make-believe scenario.

Bainbridge Island Museum of Art is currently featuring:
The Mesa Gallery presents "Cut & Bent" a group exhibition of art in tin, curated by Bill Bran-Mickle. Tin as an artistic medium is fairly unusual even though it has surrounded us for many decades.  With the surge in interest in environmental conservation, it is no wonder artists have found their way to contribute by recycling tins into artistic expression. Featuring work by Deborah Paul, Jenny Fillius, Kathy Ross, Loran Scruggs, Nan Wonderly, Nia Michaels & Ross Palmer Beecher.
The Sherry Grover Gallery presents "Artists' Books: Chapter Four" & "Miniature Books: Collection of Margot E Amestoy"

Wayne Bund @ Gage
Gage Academy of Art is currently featuring:
"Drink & Draw" every 1st Friday from 7-9pm. Each session is based on a theme – a costumed model, still life arrangements, music, videos and more. We’ll provide the drawing materials for free – or just have a cocktail or glass of wine and watch the artists work! No formal instruction is provided, no host bar. Ages 21+ only, please. $10 at the door.

"The Common Sense" @ Henry
"Sanctum" @ Henry
The Henry Art Gallery is currently featuring:
"Sanctum" by Juan Pampin & James Coupe (4 May 2013 - 23 August 2015). An interactive art installation, Sanctum employs surveillance systems to generate cinematic narratives with social media content that matches the demographic profile of passers-by. Sanctum seeks to investigate the narrative potential of social media while raising important and provocative questions about the conflicting imperatives emerging in our culture as we promote and embrace ever-more-intrusive electronic media, while still cherishing traditional notions of privacy.

The Frye Art Museum is currently featuring:
"Structure & Ornament" by Leo Saul Berk, an exhibition which comprises sculptural and video work by Seattle artist Leo Saul Berk, as well as two new site-specific works commissioned by the Museum.
"Andy Warhol: Little Red Book #178" Little Red Book #178 comprises nineteen Polaroids of friends and celebrities, many of whom were involved in the production of Warhol's film L'Amour (1973), which was filmed in Paris in September 1970. L'Amour was written and directed by Warhol and Paul Morrissey. The film starred Warhol superstars Jane Forth and Donna Jordan, French actor Max Delys, and American actor Michael Sklar; the cast also included Peter Greenlaw and fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld.
The Frye also hosts an art lecture series every Thursday night.

With this much going on, you couldn't possibly complain that there's nothing to do in Seattle!

Support your local art scene! Cheers.
