JULY Art Fix: Upcoming Events

If you need your art fix for the month of July (and I know I do!), here are some shows that you won't want to miss! This month, the USA (and subsequently Seattle) is celebrating independence! If 4th of July just isn't enough time to celebrate with colourful sparkles, fire, and food, try one of these: World UFO Day (2nd), Build a Scarecrow Day (5th), Teddy Bear Picnic Day (10th), Bastille Day (14th), Cow Appreciation Day (15th), National Ice Cream Day (20th), National Lasagna Day (29th), and more! This is also a fantastic month to appreciate your local artists and craftsfolk who help make Seattle such a unique and independednt community. Summer art walks are some of the best!

LAST CHANCE:

"Crow/Raven: Magic & Mystery" at ArtEast. “To know the crow is to know ourselves,” writes John Marzluff, award-winning author of In the Company of Crows and Ravens. The strange familiarity of crows and ravens has intrigued humans for centuries, inspiring mythic interpretation, artistic expression, and scientific inquiry.   “Crow/Raven: Magic and Mystery” brings together these human responses to crows through two art exhibitions, artist talks, and public lectures. The series runs through July 12 at the artEAST Art Center and Blakely Hall in the Issaquah Highlands.

"Deep Pulls: A Screen printing Art Show" at Ltd GalleryA look into the childhood of some of the Northwest's top Screen Printers. Growing up, those obscure references of pop culture become as important to us as the mainstream icons we all know so well. We revel in their uniqueness that solidifies their presence in our memories, and we truly feel connected to them as they are special…to just us. Show runs thru 13 July!

Braden Duncan @ Ghost Gallery
Gina Tolentino @ Pettirosso

The Capitol Hill Art Walk ~ Thursday, 10 July from 5-9pm. Selected shows:
Cloud Gallery - "Narratives & Dialogs" by Jeff Mihalyo. The artist discusses world and philosophical issues through a multifaceted system of symbolic and narrative compositions. Each painting emphasizes a need for balance in order to explore the complexity of the theme. He conveys the need for balance through a poetic arrangement of his subjects and by presenting multiple viewpoints of an issue within the painting’s narrative. This multi-dimensional approach to the portrayal of a “vision” allows each image to behave as an open-ended statement. The setting and characters of each picture can appeal to the viewer’s psychology, inviting one to develop questions about what is depicted and ultimately draw one’s own conclusions about the meaning of the work. The suggested narrative and viewer interpretation is key to the interplay between the artist and his audience.
Ghost Gallery - "Chromatic: A Watercolour Exhibition" featuring Seattle artists Braden Duncan, Chandler Woodfin, Levi Hastings, Rich M Stevens and Siolo Thompson. Catering and Cocktails by Wonder Lust Catering, the creative culinary effort of Chef Mike Stamey.
Joe Bar - "We are Witness" by Lindsey Rae Gjording. A collection of multimedia art and photography that has varying shades of meaning and is only now making sense as it forms itself into the whole. Sight and sightlessness. Women as worship. Blind by gold leaf. The acknowledgement that sometimes by seeing you are not just a viewer but a witness.
Ltd Gallery - "Deep Pulls" (encore)
PettiRosso - Gina Tolentino, paintings inspired by the flora and fauna of the oceans, as well as vintage burlesque costumes, circus life, and high fashion.

Stasia Burrington @ Twilight Gallery
The West Seattle Art Walk ~ Thursday, 10 July from 6-9pm. Selected shows:
Twilight Gallery - "Stellar: Evidence of an Alternate Space Program" by Stasia Burrington.
“What I’m after – childish wonder, stark beauty, vast loneliness + absurd simplicity. Exploration, finding comfort in the unknown + active curiosity. This will be sort of a silly show. I’m not a scientist, or an astronaut, this is just a portrait of what I thought being a space explorer was like, when I was 10. I have this desire to touch emptiness, embrace the nonsensical, and lose a sense of proportion. Gadgets, physics and magic create a portrait of an innocent motivation to seek comfort and wonder in the unknown.” ~ Stasia
Also check out new work at Arts West, Click! Design That Fits, The Heartland Cafe, Hotwire Coffee, Shadowland, Skylark Cafe, Shoofly Pie, West 5, Wild Rose's, Windermere, and more!

Urban Light Studios - "Wake in Progress" by Stephen Crowe, an ongoing visual adaptation of James Joyce’s "Finnegans Wake", perhaps the most difficult work of modernist fiction, composed in the fluid, shifting language of dreams. Wake in Progress translates the unique text into a fusion of styles and imagery from the history of visual art, from cave paintings to comic books, in a joyfully anarchic collision of high and popular culture. The resulting collection straddles the line between a series of independent images and a sequential narrative, in which recurring motifs and developing styles translate the most complex novel of the 20th Century into an evolving story in pictures.

The Georgetown Art Attack ~ Saturday 12 July from 6-9pm. This month is the Georgetown Carnival from noon-10pm, to coincide with the art walk! Selected shows:
Eight and Sand - "Icons of Horror" by Reed Carpenter. There are certain objects that if viewed by themselves appear innocuous, perhaps almost comical...but to those who have been raised watching horror films, to those who delight in the tingles of the spine, a simple hockey mask can immediately bring up memories of a film half-seen through the fingers, popcorn spilling from the lap as the bodycount rises. This show explores the idea of horror movie icons, items that even seen in the light of day can pull you right back to that feeling you got seeing Jason lumber out of the darkness for the first time, seeing the Cenobites half-shrouded in darkness promising secrets no mortal should know. Through a variety of mediums, a handful of these objects are presented here...what memories do these bring back for you?
Georgetown Liquor Company - "Chapter 19: Heart Wire" by Rustic Visions (O'Shea Kinsey). New mixed media assemblage collage!

Cullom Gallery, formerly in the International District neighborhood of Seattle, has forged new ground via online and pop-up events, specializing in mobile happenings and new ways of regarding the space of a gallery. This month, Cullom Gallery will present Seattle artist Ellen Ziegler. Ellen Ziegler's solo exhibition, Vermilion, features a new series of large and small-scale drawings rendered with red transfer paper, an electrically-charged stylus, and gouache applied through punctured stencils. The series is an exploration of unrestrained, intuitive mark making, as well as a visceral embrace of the color vermilion’s rich visual power and its many-fold associations to geology, culture, biology, and art history. Ziegler’s drawings read as a micro/macro rush across the page, offering fleeting associations to ancient human imagery, microscopic forms, synaptic maps, and celestial space.
LxWxH Subscription Project - "Wavelength." June's box set from LWH is a music box!! Featuring a 7" lathe cut square record by Emily Pothast and David Golightly of Hair and Space Museum. This record comes bound in a paperboard/fabric case that folds up into a 3D pyramid with printed surfaces. Also featured is musician Garek Jon Druss, who has made a series of wave form diagrams in watercolor using a Monophonic synthesizer, subtractive synthesis, and a twin oscillator wave form as a signal source and conceptual foundation. The result is a visually compelling drawing and painting of the aesthetics of sound. Your art comes in a beautifully hand-crafted box made by Steve Leroux! Only 2 boxes were still available the last time I checked!

ONGOING:

The SAAM is featuring "Deco Japan: Shaping Art & Culture 1920-1945" Jazz. Gin. Short hair and short skirts. The modern girl. The rise of film, and the advent of skyscrapers and air travel. After World War I, the world was changing rapidly. With the machine age came an increased emphasis on speed. The art world answered with Art Deco, which had a driving energy that found expression in its use of themes from cultures all over the world, wild appropriation of other art forms, and graphic designs with fast lines that could be adapted and used on everything from housewares to posters, and for everything from politics to advertising. By World War II, Art Deco had left its mark on almost every medium of visual art.Through 19 October. (from www.seattleartmuseum.org)

Mark Tobey @ SAM
The SAM is currently featuring a multitude of exhibits! Check out:
"Modernism in the Pacific Northwest: The Mythic and the Mystical." Meet the mystics—the four artists who, in the late 1930s and ‘40s, became known as the Northwest School of modern art. Fed by one another’s passions and talents, Mark Tobey, Morris Graves, Kenneth Callahan, and Guy Anderson sought to create art that consciously responded to the world events around them. All saw art as a form of spiritual quest. All were influenced by the Northwest’s swirling mix of Native American and Asian traditions. Soon, they were known in New York and across the country—regional artists whose visions, for a time, were universal. Show runs thru 7 September.

Ken Price @ the Henry
The Henry Art Gallery is currently hosting "Inside/Outside" by Ken Price in the North Galleries. The Henry is pleased to present a focused exhibition of works by Ken Price (U.S., 1935 – 2012) dating from the late 1970s to the mid 1990s from the Henry’s permanent collection. Central to the exhibition is Heat Wave, a portfolio of prints developed in conjunction with Black Sparrow Graphic Arts that illustrates a compilation of poems by prolific poet and fiction writer Charles Bukowski (U.S., born Germany 1920 – 1994). The portfolio was produced in 1995, a year after Bukowski’s death and is comprised of 15 prints on paper in an edition of 170. Widely considered a cult hero, in his writing Charles Bukowski depicted the depravity of American urban life, leading Time magazine to call him “the laureate of American lowlife” in the late 1980s. The other works included in the exhibition highlight aspects of Ken Price’s figurative production, as well as his long-standing investment in ceramics, drawing, and print-making. The pieces are tightly framed, everyday representations of urban and rural scenes, rendered in a playful and colorful manner. They recall cartoons or graphic novels, appearing familiar at first, but uncanny upon closer inspection. A Los Angeles-based artist, Ken Price is known primarily as a sculptor and a printmaker. He is also widely recognized for his abstract large-scale ceramic sculptures. (from henryart.org)

The Frye Art Museum is featuring Isamu Noguchi and Qi Baishi: Beijing 1930. This exhibition brings together for the first time the work of two of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, Isamu Noguchi (American, 1904-1988) and Qi Baishi (Chinese, 1864-1957). Comprising drawings, ink paintings, calligraphic works, and sculptures from the University of Michigan Museum of Art, the Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum, and private and public collections, it presents forty-three works by Noguchi and twenty-three by Qi Baishi. The exhibition and its accompanying publication document the period of six months that Noguchi spent in Beijing and shed new light on the little-known relationship between the two artists. (from fryemuseum.org)  The Frye also hosts an art lecture series every Thursday night.

With this much going on, you couldn't possibly complain that there's nothing to do in Seattle!

Support your local art scene! Cheers.
