The 2nd Thursday Art Walk in West Seattle, Thursday, 8 August from 6-9pm. Selected shows:
Twilight Artist Collective - Ed Roth, "Dolly was Cloned from a Mammary Gland (I Will Always Love You)." Roth’s current work explores themes of cloning, duality, cognitive thought, and alteration. Long fascinated and horrified with the story of “Dolly” the first cloned sheep, Ed Roth’s work represents this idea of a “new” creation copied from the original. Cloning, copying, duplicating, reusing and mimicking, recycling and appropriating. From the use of old vintage tarps and left over paint, from icon to icon, old materials and new, long outdated rules of conformity and well worn clichés, to yet another set of blindly followed societal rules. This work uses images of the cloned sheep to mirror the ways in which we follow. (from www.twilightart.net)

Traditionally mystical, how does this not-day and not-night hour manifest through artists from the Pacific Northwest, or tap into the region's inherently sublime nature? These six artists will examine the quality of the light, whether it is restricted only to earthly light, and the philosophy of its nature.

This will be an art event you can't miss! Show runs through 28 September.

"PAX Prime" at The WA State Convention Center, Friday-Monday, 30 August-2 September. In 2004, the folks at Penny Arcade decided they wanted a show exclusively for gaming. Sure, comics, anime, and other nerd hobbies were cool, and those activities all had their own shows… so what about games? From that idea spawned a small 4,500 person event in Bellevue, Washington, focused on the culture and community that is gaming. Since then, the show hasn’t looked back. Doubling in size each year until venue capacities were reached, in 2010 the show expanded into Boston for PAX East, drawing tens of thousands of attendees in the inaugural year. The shows in Seattle and Boston represent the two largest gaming events in North America! (from prime.paxsite.com) PAX features brand new games for consoles and computers as well as exhibits, panels, board games, live music, and more! Tickets are completely SOLD OUT for 2013, so get them early next year if you can!

ONGOING:

The SAM is featuring "Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion." The exhibition opens 27 June and runs through 8 September. The tremendous innovation of Japanese fashion designers who have revolutionized the way we think of fashion today will be shown for the first time in Seattle at SAM. The leading Japanese designers who initially gained recognition in the West were Kenzo Takada and Issey Miyake in the 1970s, but it is in the 1980s that Japanese designers emerged with an entirely new aesthetic. In the summer of 1983, Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto launched a stark new aesthetic at the Paris runway shows. Based on monochrome black and white, they presented asymmetric and at times artfully perforated designs, which loosely skimmed the female silhouette. Recognized as a radical counterproposal to Western notions of the fitted gown, their designs gained instant notoriety. This was the beginning of what is now three decades of innovative design that has in turn influenced and reshaped our Western aesthetics of dress. Curated by Akiko Fukai, director of the Kyoto Costume Institute, the exhibition showcases the early emphasis on light and shadow, and the increasingly diverse ultramodern designs that range from the deconstruction and reinvention of Western couture models to wildly revolutionary designs that draw from contemporary street fashion. (from www.seattleartmuseum.org)

Paul Laffoley @ The Henry

The Henry Art Gallery is currently hosting "Down Time", an 8-week video presentation exploring 'free-choice learning' and the pursuit of entertainment in our 'down time'. The show runs through 25 August. Also see "Paul Laffoley: Premonitions of the Bauharoque,"
'Laffoley’s work uniquely combines imagery, colors, diagrams, symbols, and texts to create densely layered paintings that take anywhere from one to three years to paint and code. His earliest works referenced eastern mandalas in form and also borrow from that model of contemplation and spiritual examination. His sustained and intense focus on both image and content has given way to a unique and complex body of work that combines theory and encrypted knowledge with visionary representation.' The show runs through 15 September. (from henryart.org) And, last but not least, "The Ghost of Architecture: Recent and Promised Gifts," focuses on contemporary works that invoke architecture without citing it directly.

Buster Simpson @ The Frye
The Frye Art Museum presents "BUSTER SIMPSON // SURVEYOR", the first retrospective survey of work by Seattle artist Buster Simpson, a pioneer in the field of urban environmentalism and art in public spaces. The show opens 15 June and runs through 13 October. The Frye also hosts an art lecture series every Thursday night.

With this much going on, you couldn't possibly complain that there's nothing to do in Seattle!

Support your local art scene! Cheers.
