SOIL

The Pioneer Square Art Walk ~ Thursday, 7 May from 5-9pm. Selected shows:
Artifact Gallery - "Full Swing" by Graham Vittum & Joseph BrooksSpring is in "Full Swing" as they say, the arrival of warmer weather welcomes the start of baseball season, spring sports, and beckons the renewed exploration of the great outdoors. So oil up your bike chain, put new laces on your hiking boots and come enjoy and support local artists for an evening...and be inspired to head back out into the urban wilderness of the Pacific Northwest!
AXIS Pioneer Square - "Sur | Real" by Jeff Mihalyo & Kellie Talbot. Surrealist Jeff Mihalyo and photorealist Kellie Talbot are here to mess with your reality. One plumbs the depths of his imagination, dredging up dreamscapes and exotic scenes where every floating fish is a symbol, and every color is a crescendo. The other sticks strictly to reality, where she plunks us down onto the tarmac of some quiet American highway in paintings that make us focus on the tools, signs, buildings and materials that are wrought and forgot. And Bherd Studios has brought these two classical painters together—in the same room—this May at AXIS Gallery. (Your head may never be the same.)
Ethnic Heritage Art Gallery (Seattle Municipal Tower #3F) - "Woven Woods" by Naoko MorisawaHer artworks are hand-made of hundreds of very small slices of natural/oil-dyed woodchips on board. This mosaic wood art-form innovation comes from a traditional Japanese style of art, though there; she has improvised the shaped cuts, both lined and curved into a woven arrangement and have added more color elements. This exhibition also celebrates Asian Pacific American Heritage Month 2015.
Flatcolor Gallery - "Journey into the Other" group show. Featuring experimental landscapes, surreal environments and abstract compositions, "Journey into the Other" transports the viewer to unique worlds created by the artists and challenges the viewer to explore new ways of perceiving the world around them - stepping away from one reality into the "Other". Flatcolor welcomes eleven artists from around the country to exhibit their work in “Journey into the Other”. Each of the artists work in “Journey into the Other” culminates in a meeting of imagination, emotion and perception - creating new realities and interpretations of worlds real and imaginary.
Mariane Ibrahim Gallery - "Pagans" by Jim Chuchu, Kenyan photographer & videographer. ‘Pagans’ will feature a series of photographs and video installations which envisions a reconstruction of future-past anonymous African Deities and attempts to reconstruct pre-colonial religious practices in Africa. The series retrace various movements.

Nearly all of the artists work in the toy and entertainment industry, creating model kits or doing concept work for companies like Disney Studios or DC Comics, and all of them are great fans of John’s work, each setting out to express their love of the music, be it wistfully nostalgic or cheekily humorous. Added to this mix is photographer May Pang, best known for being John’s partner during his “Lost Weekend” period of the 1970s. During that time period May took photos of life with John, many of which were published in her book “Instamatic Karma!”. Nine of these wonderful images are included in this show. Our Artist Talk will commence at 7:30 pm, with Tim Bruckner and May Pang in attendance.

Throughout history—from the gilded palaces and monuments of the ancient world to the golden Baroque-style halls of Versailles—gold has been used to symbolize power, wealth, and prosperity. The lust for gold has inspired centuries of westward migration in search of lost cities of gold, roads paved with gold, and river valleys full of gold. Artists and craftsmen have used gold for thousands of years to engender status and to decorate gods and noblemen alike. Today in popular culture, gold is still a symbol used to represent the fabulous and fancy. Featuring: Jana Brike, C3, Lacey Bryant, Wesley T. Wright, Mary Syring, Ron Norman, Archer Dougherty, Caitlin Hackett, Jacques Bartels, Megan Buccere, Elrod, Zoe Keller, Stephanie Pui-Mun Law, Amandalynn, Melanie Alves, Matthew Robertson, Erica Calardo, Jel Ena, Carly Janine Mazur, Sheri DeBow, Erich J. "Crypticon" Friday-Sunday, 22-24 May at the SeaTac Hilton Hotel. Crypticon Seattle is the convention celebrating the Pacific Northwest’s Darker Side. Three days of your favorite actors, authors, and artists, along with tons of new people and things you never knew existed. But we are so much more than a tidal wave of blood, guts, and scares.
What started as a modest convention for hardcore horror fans has turned into a huge event of the creepy and supernatural, held in an impressive venue. One of Crypticon Seattle’s biggest reasons for existing is to help support the arts. We have opportunities for local, and not-so-local, talent in all fields, be that movies, television, radio, music, art, literature, or creators and purveyors of household products and games—all dark-themed to tickle the terrifying fancies of our lurid Seattle horde.
Some of our most popular yearly events include the film festival and contest, the makeup contest, and the writing contest, and the art and costume contests—each with an awards ceremony and incredible prizes. We also have the ever-popular Biohazard parties, question and answer panels with top names in the business, and opportunities to meet actors, authors, artists, directors, paranormal experts—just to name a few. Between the scheduled activities, you can browse the wares in the vendor room and meet other like-minded ghouls in a weekend bathed in the fascinating and gruesome.
Crypticon welcomes and supports all types of dark art and encourages people from all walks of life to come and enjoy the show. Love zombies? We got ya! Vampires? Yes! Goth, fetish, dark fantasy or sci-fi? Yeah, we’ve got that, too! And it’s not just once a year that we flaunt our freakish best—we sponsor, support, and run many dark-themed events throughout the year, all over western Washington.

ONGOING:

Chiho Aoshima @ SAAM

The SAAM is currently featuring:
"Rebirth of the World" by Chiho Aoshima. (2 May - 4 October) Welcome to the fantastic world of Chiho Aoshima. This might just be our future. Who’s to say that as technology advances, as natural disasters rise, as the organic world blends with the manmade, that smartphones will not become smart buildings? That skyscrapers will not stand up and walk among mountains? That ghosts and spirits don’t already float through our world? Aoshima’s work has undeniably dark images but a positive attitude. There’s no evidence of fear in her art. Her murals, digital prints, and drawings don’t want to escape from society or from the future. Instead, she seems to embrace all possibilities, including a world where the skeletons and ghosts reside alongside the rest of us. Her work may look like a surreal fantasy. But ask Aoshima, and she’ll tell you she’s showing us the reality that our beautifully chaotic world may be hurtling toward.
"Conceal/Reveal: Making Meaning in Chinese Art" (20 December 2014 - 21 June 2015) This exhibition shows that Chinese artists traditionally employ different approaches to construct layered meanings in an indirect but intriguing way: using one motif to represent another, either through their literary associations or shared pronunciations (homophones); playing with mediums such as using contemporary ceramics to imitate ancient lacquerware; or the pretext of metaphors to make social or political commentaries. This purposeful layering by the artist invites the viewer to mentally peel the layers and reveal the embedded meanings.

The SAM is currently featuring:
"Serious Games" by Harun Farocki (19 March - 12 July). German filmmaker Harun Farocki’s four-part video installation Serious Games examines the way we use technology and simulation to prepare American soldiers for missions in the Middle East and Afghanistan and to debrief them after returning from active duty. Filmed at different army training centers in the U.S., the work presents us with four scenarios where the line between reality and fiction becomes disconcertingly blurred. By charting the seamless integration of computer-simulated environments into training programs—and the substitution of a virtual environment for the real and the real for the virtual—Farocki forcefully impresses on the viewer our emotional and psychological investment in the make-believe scenario.

Bainbridge Island Museum of Art is currently featuring:
The Mesa Gallery presents "Cut & Bent" a group exhibition of art in tin, curated by Bill Bran-Mickle. Tin as an artistic medium is fairly unusual even though it has surrounded us for many decades.  With the surge in interest in environmental conservation, it is no wonder artists have found their way to contribute by recycling tins into artistic expression. Featuring work by Deborah Paul, Jenny Fillius, Kathy Ross, Loran Scruggs, Nan Wonderly, Nia Michaels & Ross Palmer Beecher.
The Sherry Grover Gallery presents "Artists' Books: Chapter Four" & "Miniature Books: Collection of Margot E Amestoy"

Wayne Bund @ Gage
Gage Academy of Art is currently featuring:
"Drink & Draw" every 1st Friday from 7-9pm. Each session is based on a theme – a costumed model, still life arrangements, music, videos and more. We’ll provide the drawing materials for free – or just have a cocktail or glass of wine and watch the artists work! No formal instruction is provided, no host bar. Ages 21+ only, please. $10 at the door.
The Steel Gallery presents "Idle & Blessed" by Wayne Bund (6 March - 8 May). Join Portland-based interdisciplinary artist Wayne Bund for a showing of his work in Seattle as a three-part extravaganza. In the Steele Gallery, he shows a continuation of the body of work, Idle and Blessed, a grouping of photographs and video depicting a tribe of men finding home in the play and games of childhood and mythology. During the run of the exhibition, Bund performs the choreographed dance-drag-theater piece Sass Manifesto as a full-length work. Quickly changing hats as an educator, Bund then teaches a one-day movement-based workshop around queer identity, entitled Queering Fantasy.

"The Common Sense" @ Henry
"Sanctum" @ Henry
The Henry Art Gallery is currently featuring:
"2015 University of WA MFA & MDes Thesis Exhibit" - Opening reception Monday, 22 May from 7-9pm (see above for more info)
"Sanctum" by Juan Pampin & James Coupe (4 May 2013 - 23 August 2015). An interactive art installation, Sanctum employs surveillance systems to generate cinematic narratives with social media content that matches the demographic profile of passers-by. Sanctum seeks to investigate the narrative potential of social media while raising important and provocative questions about the conflicting imperatives emerging in our culture as we promote and embrace ever-more-intrusive electronic media, while still cherishing traditional notions of privacy.

The Frye Art Museum is currently featuring:
"Structure & Ornament" by Leo Saul Berk, an exhibition which comprises sculptural and video work by Seattle artist Leo Saul Berk, as well as two new site-specific works commissioned by the Museum.
"Andy Warhol: Little Red Book #178" Little Red Book #178 comprises nineteen Polaroids of friends and celebrities, many of whom were involved in the production of Warhol's film L'Amour (1973), which was filmed in Paris in September 1970. L'Amour was written and directed by Warhol and Paul Morrissey. The film starred Warhol superstars Jane Forth and Donna Jordan, French actor Max Delys, and American actor Michael Sklar; the cast also included Peter Greenlaw and fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld.
The Frye also hosts an art lecture series every Thursday night.

With this much going on, you couldn't possibly complain that there's nothing to do in Seattle!

Support your local art scene! Cheers.
