APRIL Art Fix: Upcoming Events

If you need your art fix for the month of April (and I know I do!), here are some shows that you won't want to miss! It's Comicon month! There are awesome exhibits popping up all over the city, so grab your cape, don your secret identity and come support your favourite artists!

Fun fact: According to the Oxford English Dictionary an ‘April gentleman’ once meant ‘a foolish man; specifically a newly-married husband, considered as a fool.’

Red Raven Gallery - "A Rich Life in Colour: Jacqueline Chisick Retrospective". The human figure has always been important in her paintings, but since moving to Port Townsend her colours have become more intense and rich, with mysterious, deep crimsons and violets contrasting with the light of gold and vermillion. “I have been asked ‘Why do you paint?’ The obvious and only answer is that I paint because I must. "Landscapes by Enid Smith Becker" at SAM Gallery, opening reception: Thursday, 7 April from 6-7.30pm. Layering paint and natural and made-made materials, is a metaphor for re-building the land for SAM Gallery's featured artist, Enid Smith Becker. In the studio, she plays with reality and scale and also with the natural and built worlds. Bark patterns turn into a hillside, peeling paint becomes red clouds, or a crack in the sidewalk emerges as a river.

The Pioneer Square Art Walk ~ Thursday, 7 April from 5-9pm. Selected shows: 
Artifact Gallery - "Human Nature" group show. Featuring Burgandy Viscosi, Craig Cundiff, Eric Nez, Lauren Olsen, Michelle Anderst & SIENNA. Artifact Gallery in association with Cascadia NW Arts & Music Festival are pleased to showcase seven influential artists from the west coast music festival scene. This will be the gallery’s first show of 2016, and the first showing for each of these established PNW artists at Artifact. With oil, acrylic and airbrush on canvas and panel, each artist in this group show taps into the connection between human essence, physicality and our intrinsic connection with the life-force of nature. 
AXIS Pioneer Square - "Given Surroundings" by John Osgood juxtaposes John Osgood's commercial work with his more traditional, trademark style. In a new collection of pieces, Osgood showcases his collaboration with a campaign launched by New Amsterdam Vodka to capture the creative atmosphere of Seattle. Created over a period of five months, these pieces were inspired by Osgood's surroundings, both natural and man-made. His work combines figurative and non-representational styles in a rich, dimensional display of line-work and explosive color. Also, WEAVE Magazine Release Party! Volume 4: The Muralism Issue!
CoCA - "35 Live: CoCA Members Show" Join us at PS35 on Thursday April 7 from 6-10pm for artist and curator led tours of 35 Live. This is an opportunity to ask the artists questions about their work, and to learn about their creative processes. Enjoy a drink or two while exploring CoCA's newest pop up gallery. Featuring 72 visual, video and installation artists plus a digital exhibition. Most of the art is for sale and a beautiful, a printed catalog featuring all 185 artists is also available (proceeds support CoCA and our artist members). Featuring the artwork of 185 emerging and career artists from around the world, 35 Live: CoCA Members' Show is part of our year-long 35th anniversary celebration.
Kraken Congee - Joseph Brooks. We are excited to have Tiny Dodo Art Gallery popping up every 1st Thursday for Pioneer Square Art Walk starting in April! Our featured art will change out monthly and will be available for purchase through Tiny Dodo. Come down and check out some funky fresh new art, grab a drink, and a bite to eat. Keep an eye on this event page for featured artists and specials on food and drink. April's Pioneer Square artwalk is featuring prolific fine art and urban artist, Joseph Brooks! Roq La Rue - "Tender Loving Darkness" by Danny van Ryswyk. Amsterdam based artist Danny van Ryswyk works digitally, producing prints and 3D sculptures of moody and contemplative characters, often with dark themes and settings. Sometimes encased in bell-jars, they’ve a Victorian feel of scientific specimens from another era. Painstakingly painted in tiny details they can be surrounded by scenic tableaus, and/or holding stage-like props. Danny’s sculpts capture the past and can echo a brave new world – in an impressively beautiful and hypnotic way. We will be exhibiting 9 sculptures and 14 digital prints, all reflecting his enchanting, beautiful macabre aesthetic. The artist will be in attendance for his US solo debut!
Treason Gallery - "Levels II" by Brian Kirhagis (BK). BK is one of the contemporary art world’s fastest rising stars. LEVELS: II will be BK’s first ever exhibition on the West Coast. BK’s work ethic is second to none. Working around the clock, painting piece after piece, BK’s message resonates with everyone that comes into contact with his art. Creating series of works that have been described as “a modern Salvador Dali”, BK uses his canvas and brushes as weapons against social injustice and racial prejudices that inflict our world today. Treason Gallery will be showing over fifty works by BK. A retrospective exhibit at the young age of thirty, his evolution and profound message will be nothing short of spectacular. Urban Light Studios - "Georgetown Atelier Student Exhibition" Georgetown Atelier presents the student work of the Full-Time Atelier. By teaching the foundations of classical art as the building blocks for professional artists, this program is designed to develop visually inventive gallery and industry artists alike. The work represents the three tiered curriculum taught at Georgetown Atelier—Tier I: Drawing Foundations, Tier II: Painting Foundation with optional Digital Painting, and Tier III: Advanced Painting and Thesis Projects. Throughout the program, the students are training their eye in order to see and capture the subtleties of what they are observing. As they work towards becoming more accurate in their observations, they are creating a visual library from which they can work constructively and inventively. The program lays the foundations of observational and constructive methods from which the students are then able to build upon to achieve their individual goals. Closing Reception: Nikki Frumkin
Warlock Labs - "Space Magic" by Anatomecha. Anatomecha is a digital artist who manipulates mathematical patterns in real-time, accompanied by electronic music. He'll be spinning images live at Warlock Labs during the Greenwood Art Walk. There will be an interactive projection art installation set up where anyone can try their hand at creating Space Magic using fractal geometry and glitch animation effects. Join us at Warlock labs for a trip 3 billion years into the future (with some light refreshments)!

"ECCC Bartkira Art Show" at True Love Gallery. One night only! Saturday, 9 April from 6-9.30pm. Tribute to Bartkira created be Ryan Humpfrey & James Harvey! A great mash up of the Simpsons and the beautifully animated anime Akira. The show will feature some of the original pages from PNW local artists as well original fan art created by over 20 Seattle artists! Artists will be in attendance! We will also be screening the Bartkira animated trailer! 20% of proceeds from the art show will be divided between Save the Children and the OISCA, the Organization for Industrial, Spiritual and Cultural Advancement. OISCA has been raising money to reforest AKIRA creator Katsuhiro Otomo's home prefecture since it was destroyed by the earthquake and tsunami of 2011.

Bridge Productions - Ashleigh Rose Robb. Bridge Productions is pleased to feature Ashleigh Rose Robb's first solo exhibition in Seattle! Originally from Los Angeles, Ashleigh Robb is a Seattle-based artist who uses mark-making as a gesture to record the passage of time. Her compositions create a kind of document, composed from the accumulation of simple lines and marks to build up form. The process of marking time varies, and as such, the materials used to do so are ever changing. Each line is a faint documentation which only appears up close, fading into white as you step further away. The result is a haunting, philosophical body of work that carries forward its Minimalist lineage. Also, April Curated Box Set: SIGIL! Each curated box set contains one small acrylic painting by Jazz Brown, one collapsible sculpture by Guy Merrill, and a hand-bound booklet of writing by interdisciplinary artist Meghan Trainor. The artwork is housed in a beautiful custom-made wooden box crafted by local woodworker Steve Leroux.

Eight and Sand - Rich M Stevens. Eight and sand is happy to present local artist Rich M Stevens for the month of April. Rich creates intricate conceptual mixed media works. He uses many materials including embroidery thread, cut paper, aluminum foil and resin. His works are then housed in hand built shadow boxes.
Georgetown Liquor Co - "WitchHeart: The Art of Laura Tempest Zakroff" (encore) Laura's work blends traditional and modern media with an aesthetic that spans numerous cultures and centuries, defying labels and boxes. The precise hand of intaglio application and chiaroscuro drawing mixes with digital layers and rich embellishment to create otherworldly art. She is inspired by myth and mystery, extreme detail and dreams, mixing the macabre with fantasy and wonder.
Krab Jab Studio - "Dream Covers" group exhibit. Guest curator Lauren Panepinto challenged illustrators to devise a book cover of their favorite books and the result is nothing short of spectacular. Curator Talk at 7:30 pm, with Lauren Panepinto, Creative Director of Hachette Book Group in NYC. Artists attending include Brom, Laurie Lee Brom, Jeremy Wilson, Marc Scheff, and Wylie Beckert. Attendees will be able to pre-order our Dream Covers catalog, available only through Krab Jab Studio! This limited edition catalog includes the art in this show as well a curatorial write up and artist statements. Definitely a collector's item.

April Edition of COLLECT, Thursday, 14 April from 6.30-8.30pm. See + Appreciate = Own. COLLECT is back with our April Edition! The tour will begin at Vermillion Art Gallery and Bar featuring a residency-show (an evolving work) by A K Mimi Allin: DEEP KNOWLEDGE AND THE PASSING WEATHER. Next, we will visit the Seattle Art Museum to see the show everyone’s been talking about, Kehinde Wiley: A New Republic. Then, we’ll head over to CoCA (Center on Contemporary Art) at Rubix for artist and curator-led tours of the 35 Live Members’ Show. Our last stop will be Calypte Gallery, featuring Linda Davidson: What it is, how it is. The bus will return to Vermillion. As usual, there are small bites and free flowing champagne included with your ticket price of $25.

"Turn (Part 4)" 4th Tuesdays at Joe Bar. Tuesday, 26 April at Joe Bar from 6.30-9.30pm. The collaborative series continues as the next artist takes the evolving piece for the month of January. What will remain from the work received? What will go on to the next artist? TURN is a year-long collaborative exhibition, where twelve artists take turns transforming a single piece.

"Journey to Dunhuang: Buddhist Art of the Silk Road Caves" (5 March - 12 June 2016) Located at China’s western frontier, the ancient city of Dunhuang lays at the convergence of the northern and southern routes of the Silk Road—at a crossroads of the civilizations of East Asia, Central Asia, and the Western world. From the late fourth century and until the decline of the Silk Road in the fourteenth century, Dunhuang was a bustling desert oasis—a center of trade and pilgrimage, and a gateway for new forms of art, culture, and religions. This exhibition brings us the wonders of Dunhuang’s caves seen through the eyes of James and Lucy Lo featuring a comprehensive selection of their photographs, manuscripts, and artist renditions.

"Kehinde Wiley: The New Republic" (11 February-8 May) Kehinde Wiley is one of the leading American artists to emerge in the last decade and he has been ingeniously reworking the grand portraiture traditions of Western culture. Since ancient times the portrait has been tied to the representation of power, and in European courts and churches, artists and their patrons developed a complex repository of postures and poses and refined a symbolic language. This language, woven into all aspects of a portrait, described the sitter’s influence and power, virtue and character, or profession. In his consideration of portrait traditions, Wiley has been especially drawn to the grand aristocratic portraits of the 18th century.
 

Bainbridge Island Museum of Art is currently featuring:
"Goings & Comings" by Caroline Cooley Browne. Caroline Cooley Browne is a Bainbridge Island artist who works in painting, mixed media, and fiber. In this unique exhibition, two series of work are featured: a set of new oil pastel paintings and Doodles/Sketches, a work-in-progress yet to be determined. Join the journey! "Painting seems to tap my subconscious more than any other medium. The images emerge from a place deep inside, a place I can often only go when I make art." - Caroline Cooley Browne

We’ll provide the drawing materials for free – or just have a cocktail or glass of wine and watch the artists work! No formal instruction is provided, no host bar. "Maximum Fun: A New Sincerity Event" Maximum Fun is part picnic, part aerobics class, and part community-building event featuring works by Nat Evans, Mario Lemafa, and Elizabeth Spavento. Join us at the UW's Sylvan Theater to traverse mental obstacle courses, jump over things, and shout in unison. Playing off Jesse Thorn's Manifesto for the New Sincerity, Maximum Fun seeks to probe the relationship between sincerity and irony through a series of interactive activities inspired by the legendary Evel Knievel.

The Frye Art Museum is currently featuring:  

"Frye Salon" (2 February - 4 September). Frye Salon features over one hundred forty paintings from the Frye Art Museum's Founding Collection, recreating the sumptuous viewing experience enjoyed by visitors to the art gallery in Charles and Emma Frye's Seattle home in the first decades of the twentieth century. Hung floor to ceiling, the paintings capture the atmosphere of the Fryes' salon-style exhibitions, which showcased the artists of the renowned Munich Secession and the “stars” of the preceding Artists' Association, the Munich Künstlergenossenschaft. Frye Salon combines paintings from both generations of artists. Works by Künstlergenossenschaft masters such as Franz von Lenbach, who enjoyed fame and recognition in nineteenth-century America, hang alongside paintings by prominent Secessionists, including Franz von Stuck and Gabriel von Max. In January 1909, the New York Times noted the close ties between Secessionist and Künstlergenossenschaft artists when a “magnificent” exhibition of German art opened in a new wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art: “It is easy to see how the truly great masters among the old had many of the virtues of the young, and how finely the best art of the different generations holds together when brought into close juxtaposition.” 

With this much going on, you couldn't possibly complain that there's nothing to do in Seattle!
