Local Art Spaces
A list of galleries, studios, collectives, and art-friendly places around the Northwest that display local art and support local artists!

NEW! Calls for Art
Are you an artist who's looking for a place to display your work? Whether it's a themed group show looking for more submissions, a local coffee shop that wants to fill some wall space, a juried exhibition, convention, grant application, artist in residence, scholarship, or volunteer opportunity; I will do my best to post any and all links that I find to art possibilities for local artists!

NEW! Local Artist Features
I have met so many amazing and talented individuals in my exploration of Seattle's creative culture, that it would take me forever to interview them all. But, on occasion, I have the time to talk in depth with a fellow artist about his or her creative process. I feature artists that I admire, whose work inspires me, and who are making a consistent and positive difference in Seattle's art scene. Please take a moment to check them out and support their work.

Participate!
If you are part of a community that does not yet have an art walk; an art space that I have not yet included on my list; an organisation that offers opportunities for local artists; an artist wondering where and how to promote your work; or anyone who has questions, comments, or suggestions... let me know! I will add you to the list, spread the word, and do my best to put you in touch with someone in the Seattle art community who can help!

ONGOING:

The SAM is featuring "Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion." The exhibition opens 27 June and runs through 8 September. The tremendous innovation of Japanese fashion designers who have revolutionized the way we think of fashion today will be shown for the first time in Seattle at SAM. The leading Japanese designers who initially gained recognition in the West were Kenzo Takada and Issey Miyake in the 1970s, but it is in the 1980s that Japanese designers emerged with an entirely new aesthetic. In the summer of 1983, Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto launched a stark new aesthetic at the Paris runway shows. Based on monochrome black and white, they presented asymmetric and at times artfully perforated designs, which loosely skimmed the female silhouette. Recognized as a radical counterproposal to Western notions of the fitted gown, their designs gained instant notoriety. This was the beginning of what is now three decades of innovative design that has in turn influenced and reshaped our Western aesthetics of dress. Curated by Akiko Fukai, director of the Kyoto Costume Institute, the exhibition showcases the early emphasis on light and shadow, and the increasingly diverse ultramodern designs that range from the deconstruction and reinvention of Western couture models to wildly revolutionary designs that draw from contemporary street fashion. (from www.seattleartmuseum.org)

The Henry Art Gallery is currently hosting "Down Time", an 8-week video presentation exploring 'free-choice learning' and the pursuit of entertainment in our 'down time'. The show runs through 25 August. Also see "Paul Laffoley: Premonitions of the Bauharoque," 'Laffoley’s work uniquely combines imagery, colors, diagrams, symbols, and texts to create densely layered paintings that take anywhere from one to three years to paint and code. His earliest works referenced eastern mandalas in form and also borrow from that model of contemplation and spiritual examination. His sustained and intense focus on both image and content has given way to a unique and complex body of work that combines theory and encrypted knowledge with visionary representation.' The show runs through 15 September. (from henryart.org) And, last but not least, "The Ghost of Architecture: Recent and Promised Gifts," focuses on contemporary works that invoke architecture without citing it directly.
The Frye Art Museum presents "BUSTER SIMPSON // SURVEYOR", the first retrospective survey of work by Seattle artist Buster Simpson, a pioneer in the field of urban environmentalism and art in public spaces. The show opens 15 June and runs through 13 October. The Frye also hosts an art lecture series every Thursday night.

With this much going on, you couldn't possibly complain that there's nothing to do in Seattle!

Support your local art scene! Cheers.
