APRIL Art Fix: Upcoming Events

If you need your art fix for the month of April (and I know I do!), here are some shows that you won't want to miss. April showers remain elusive *fingers crossed,* so go out, kick it to some shows, and enjoy the local art and happy spring weather!

LAST CHANCE:

If you dig visual art and musical spectaculars, go see "Les Mamelles de Tiresias" at Vespertine Opera Theater. There are two performances, Tuesday, 2 and Thursday, 4 April, both at 8:00pm. The US Premier of Benjamin Britten's English, 2-piano adaptation of Poulenc's first opera, performed in Vaudeville/Cabaret style in the Columbia City Theater. David McDade, head coach and accompanist at Seattle Opera, and Dean Williamson, nationally renowned conductor, are featured as Music Directors and pianists of a historic new edition of this piece edited and reconstructed by internationally renowned Doctorate Musicologist, coloratura soprano, and Seattle Opera Young Artist Program alumna Emily Hindrichs. Featuring Tess Altiveros, José Rubio, Danny Oakden, and local opera singer Roxanna Walitzki. All are invited to come early and partake liberally of the in-theater bar. It will be an operatic experience unlike any other.

"Telephone" at Bherd Studios closes this week! This is, quite frankly, one of the coolest and most inspiring shows I have seen in Seattle in the past year. Imagine playing the children's game 'Telephone' except with art! Featuring six 'conversations' and 22 artists, this show is a must-see if you weren't able to make it to the last month's art walk in Greenwood. The studio is open Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, 3-5 April until 6pm.

The 2nd Friday Art Walk in the Greenwood-Phinney neighbourhood, Friday, 12 April from 6-9pm. Bherd Studios presents "Squid Inc." Giant Squid Supply was one of the great companies to arise from the American Industrial Revolution, establishing itself in Ballard, WA in 1839. A squid-producing, transporting, refining and marketing company, their products fed kings, presidents, and the common man. Their miracle cure—Squid Ink—battled ailments from halitosis to boot rot, and could be found across the nation and the world (especially popular in print shops behind the Iron Curtain). A powerful monopoly on the cephalopod trade, the company was broken up by the Supreme Court in 1987, and its history is shrouded in mystery. But the curtain has begun to lift! The collection of artifacts on display at Bherd Gallery was unearthed as recently as 1993, and has been painstakingly restored to the current condition. Four local artisans—Duffy, Justin Kane Elder & Stefan Hoffman of Electric Coffin, and Kellie Talbot—worked with the region’s top scientists, sociologists and philosophers for two decades to piece together facts amidst the mythology behind Giant Squid Supply. Transforming the Bherd Gallery into a cabinet of curiosities from the rise and fall of Squid Inc., these artist-scholars present vintage advertising and artifacts, shedding light on the history of this company that once held the world in their tentacles. Learn the forgotten history of this once-proud company, and find out why Great Grandpop always smelled of brine when he brushed his teeth. (from bherdstudios.com)

Form/Space Atelier is featuring "The Posers: Gorilla Girls on Tour," an exhibit of feminist-themed posters with vernissage to coincide with International Women's Day March 8. 'In 1985, a group of women artists founded the Guerrilla Girls. They assumed the names of dead women artists and wore gorilla masks in public, concealing their identities and focusing on the issues rather than their personalities. Between 1985 and 2000, close to 100 women, working collectively and anonymously, produced posters, billboards, public actions, books and other projects to make feminism funny and fashionable. At the turn of the millennium, three separate and independent incorporated groups formed to bring fake fur and feminism to new frontiers.' (from www.guerrillagirls.com).
