JUNE Art Fix: Upcoming Events

If you need your art fix for the month of June (and I know I do!), here are some shows that you won't want to miss! This month marks Father's Day, Gay Pride, and the summer solstice! So enjoy the sun while it lasts (in Seattle, you never know...), support equal rights for people of all genders and orientations, explore a festival, march in a parade, and get your art on (with your dad if you can convince him to go adventuring with you)!

Brook Shaden @ Twilight Artist Collective

Brooke Shaden at the Twilight Artist Collective. "Brooke’s photography focuses on creating new worlds in which to lose yourself. This exhibit will feature images created in and around water. "Enacting the Flesh: MFA Thesis Exhibition" by Naomi Faith at the Sarah Spurgeon Gallery in Ellensburg, WA. If you find yourself in Central Washington, check this out. Naomi Faith is a Bainbridge Island native and her work has been featured in exhibits all over WA State including Roq la Rue Gallery and the Seattle Erotic Arts Festival. Through her unique jewellery she explores themes of abjection, transformation, death, and rebirth. The exhibit has been extended through 17 June!

COMING UP: 

"The Brass Screw Confederacy" in Port Townsend, Friday, 31 May through Sunday, 2 June. An action-packed weekend bringing together a body of steampunks, Neo-Victorians, and sympathizers set in the Victorian seaport of Port Townsend to celebrate humanity's progress towards a more convivial world. Witness artists, actors, and the aesthetically odd that embraces esoteric apparel, exotic experiments, and fantastical imaginations unfettered by trifles like physics and decorum. The 1st Saturday Art Walk in Port Townsend, Saturday, 2 June from 5.30-8pm. Red Raven Gallery is moving to a new underground location next month! Come see "No More Tears, Only Dreams Now" featuring art by Jel Ena, Alice Savage, and Red Raven proprietor Laurie Cavannaugh McClave for the last exhibit in the gallery's old haunt! Take a walk down Water Street and check out new work at Earthenworks Gallery, Forest Gems Gallery, Gallery 9, Northwind Arts Alliance, Port Townsend Gallery, Simon Mace Gallery, Williams Gallery, and more! Martin Wittfooth, "Nocturne 2" @ Roq la Rue

The 1st Thursday Art Walk in Pioneer Square, Thursday, 6 June from 5-8pm. Roq la Rue is hosting "Otherworld," a unique collection of work by 17 artists including Casey Curran, Martin Wittfooth, John Brophy, Sam Wolfe Connelly and more! The 57 Biscayne Building is featuring "Nudes, Wine & Conversation," brand new work from its local studio collective as well as an opera performance by mezzo-soprano Roxanna Walitzki. SOIL has "Octahedron," a SOIL members show in addition to "Latent Utility," a solo show by Allyce Wood. The 1st Friday Art Walk in Fremont, Friday, 7 June from 6-9pm. ArtFX Gallery is showing the vivid paintings of Marta Konstacky! Atlas Clothing has the work of Hobbes Ginsburg. Frame Up Studios is featuring a Fremont Fair Print Retrospective. Fremont Jewelry Design is showing the ethereal floral watercolours of Elena Balekha. Hub and Bespoke (one of the most unique bicycle shops in Seattle) has photography on brushed aluminum by Shelley Engels. Makerhaus is is featuring "Haute for Teacher," the work of Carl Meinzinger, Emmett Lalish, Katharine Andrews, Patrick Maher, Shogo Ota, and Thom Jones. Pel'Meni Dumpling Tzar is featuring the mixed media drawings of Amaranta Ibarra-Sandys. (Mention the phrase 'make art, not war', and they'll give you $1 a dumpling!) Saturn is featuring four artists this month: Bill Matthews, Natasha Komoda, Noel Poage, and Sean McFadyen; and Space has Anya Zaytseva, Scott Rude, and the NW Art Connection this month. "The Obsessive Unknown Origins of Gross Irregularity," hosted by LxWxH Gallery, also part of the Georgetown Art Attack, features work by Bette Burgoyne, Casey Curran, Izzie Klingels, Katy Stone, Ken Weaver, Mandy Greer, Nancy Baker, Tony Sonnenburg, and Tyna Ontko. Inspired by Rococo, Surrealism, and the Baroque, each of the presenting artists have roots in obsessive processes, storytelling, and adornment. The presentation of these works together creates an environment that is not only immediately magical, but which also carries an undercurrent of fascinating narrative in obsession, dreams, the subconscious, folklore and literature. "Transmission" at the Mercury, Thursday, 13 June from 9.30pm til late. Featuring DJs NoDak and Kantrip, bellydance by Betty Fish, and the art of Celine Chapus from Purple Top Hat Art. You do not have to be a member for this night, and you do not need a member to sign you in. It is open to the public. No dress code. Free for members before 9.30pm, $5 for non-members. Starts at 9pm and goes til 2am. The performer will go on around 10.30 and again at 11.30, and the artist will be there all night. Come buy art, drinks, hear music and watch a sexy lady dance. "Transmission" happens the 2nd Thursday of every month.

"Cult Caves" @ Twilight Artist Collective

The 2nd Thursday Art Walk in West Seattle, Thursday, 13 June from 6-9pm. Check out "Cult Caves Zine & Portrait Release Party" at the Twilight Artist Collective featuring the xeroxed journals of Kook Teflon and Amanda Prince. "Best of Gage" at Gage Academy of Art in Capitol Hill, Friday, 14 June from 6-9pm. Join the Gage community to celebrate the Best of Gage, showcasing drawings, paintings and sculptures by Gage student artists. Select works submitted to the exhibition, as well as pieces from the Gage Ateliers, are for sale during the Friday evening event only! Tatiana Kalderash, "Colt Python" @ Bherd Studios

The 2nd Friday Art Walk in the Greenwood-Phinney neighbourhood, Friday, 14 June from 6-9pm. Bherd Studios presents "2nd Amendment: A Visual Dialogue," curated by Siolo Thompson and featuring work by 12 local artists. "There are few issues In America as controversial as the Second Amendment. You may be a gun aficionado, a marksman, and anti-firearm activist, or simply a citizen who is not quite sure where they stand. Recent events have polarized Americans and our local community on an issue that has always had explosive undercurrents. Join artists in a visual dialogue with the community that questions, examines, celebrates, criticizes, and queries the right to bear arms. This exhibit will include artists who are gun collectors and artists who are anti-firearm activists and those who hold opinions that range between the two extremes." (from bherdstudios.com)

Electric Coffin Studio presents: "Boxes of Death 4: Deluxe Death Machine" at the Piranha Shop, Saturday, 15 June from 6-10pm. Artists are each given their own coffin to do with what they want. The idea spawned from Kane Quaye, a famous coffin maker from Africa. His philosophy was that a coffin should not just be a pine box, but something that represents the person inside and their life. Each artist in the show uses the same coffin canvas format to create their own artistic statement surrounding the preconceived notions and ideas of the coffin shape. The people in the show have a chance to step out of their comfort zone and faced with the idea of death, react to it. This show features over 60 artists including 13fngrs, Corey Urlacher, Duffy, EGO, Joe Nix, Joe Vollan, Kellie Talbot, and more!

The 3rd Thursday Art Walk in Edmonds, Thursday, 20 June from 5-8pm. It's Otherworlds 1-year anniversary! In celebration, they are hosting a "Steampunk Anniversaire," curated by Braden Duncan (me), and featuring the work of Corey Urlacher, Gabino Mabalay, Hanna Myers, Larkin Cypher, and Redd Walitzki! In addition to the art walk, Otherworlds regularly hosts fun and exciting steampunk/gamer/geek/sci-fi/fantasy/gothic/horror-themed events! "Starving Artists on Parade" at the Noc Noc, Monday, 17 June from 9pm-midnight. Hosted by Betty Rage, this month's variety show showcases the best of LGBT we can find in the greater Seattle area in a celebration of the community! $5 cover, 21+ event. "Starving Artist" events happen every 3rd Monday at the Noc Noc in Downtown Seattle.

"The 42^nd Annual Fremont Fair" in Fremont, Friday, 21 June through Sunday, 23 June. The Fremont Fair is a free community celebration that draws over 100,000 guests to experience the quirky character of Seattle’s eclectic and artistic Fremont neighborhood. Coinciding with Fremont Arts Council’s Solstice Parade, the Fremont Fair includes performances by local bands, arts and crafts shopping, food and drink, artistic expression, and fun for young and old – all coming together to celebrate Fremont’s “delibertas quirkas” (the freedom to be peculiar) culture.

"Seattle PrideFest" and "Pride Parade" from Downtown Seattle to the Seattle Center, Sunday, 30 June from 11am-8pm. Seattle Pride will host its 39th annual Pride Parade starting at 11:00 AM. The parade kicks off at 4th Avenue & Union streets, and will proceed north down 4th Avenue to Denny Way. It will last approximately 2 1/2 hours and will be held rain or shine. The 7th Annual Seattle PrideFest at the Seattle Center will follow with 4 stages plus a silent disco! This year's celebration is worthy of all the gains in equality we've won over the last year!

The SAM is featuring "Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion." The exhibition opens 27 June and runs through 8 September. The tremendous innovation of Japanese fashion designers who have revolutionized the way we think of fashion today will be shown for the first time in Seattle at SAM. The leading Japanese designers who initially gained recognition in the West were Kenzo Takada and Issey Miyake in the 1970s, but it is in the 1980s that Japanese designers emerged with an entirely new aesthetic. In the summer of 1983, Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto launched a stark new aesthetic at the Paris runway shows. Based on monochrome black and white, they presented asymmetric and at times artfully perforated designs, which loosely skimmed the female silhouette. Recognized as a radical counterproposal to Western notions of the fitted gown, their designs gained instant notoriety. This was the beginning of what is now three decades of innovative design that has in turn influenced and reshaped our Western aesthetics of dress. Curated by Akiko Fukai, director of the Kyoto Costume Institute, the exhibition showcases the early emphasis on light and shadow, and the increasingly diverse ultramodern designs that range from the deconstruction and reinvention of Western couture models to wildly revolutionary designs that draw from contemporary street fashion. The Henry Art Gallery is currently hosting the "University of Washington’s School of Art Master of Fine Arts and Master of Design" annual exhibition. Throughout their program, students work with advisers and other artists to develop advanced techniques, expand concepts, discuss critical issues, and emerge with a vision and direction for their own work.The show runs from 25 May through 23 June.

The Frye Art Museum presents "BUSTER SIMPSON // SURVEYOR", the first retrospective survey of work by Seattle artist Buster Simpson, a pioneer in the field of urban environmentalism and art in public spaces. The show opens 15 June and runs through 13 October. The Frye also hosts an art lecture series every Thursday night.

With this much going on, you couldn't possibly complain that there's nothing to do in Seattle!
