SEPTEMBER Art Fix: Upcoming Events

If you need your art fix for the month of September (and I know I do!), here are some shows that you won't want to miss! For those of you who are sports fans, it's the start of football season! So you can look forward to many months yet of tailgating and team spirit; who knows, Super Bowl 2015...? For those of you non-sports fans, you can look forward to crazy traffic, super fans, and no parking on game days during art walks. So it's a balance, really. If the long weekend on Labour Day wasn't quite enough for you, there's still Cheese Pizza Day (5th), International Literacy Day (8th), No News is Good News Day (11th), National Play Doh Day (16th), International Talk Like a Pirate Day (19th), Elephant Appreciation Day (22nd), National Comic Book Day (25th), and Ask a Stupid Question Day (28th)! Summer is over, but the art is still hot! Get out, and get your art on!

Abmeyer + Wood - "Salvage" by Reilly Jensen. Artist REILLY JENSEN’s fascination with machine parts might well be the basis for her habitual acquiescence to the “call of the junkyard”. In this place, the multitudes of ruined and discarded parts are artifacts of our disposable culture, of our unquenchable persistence for the new. Reilly is intrigued by the obsolete stuff and inspired by their burial grounds. Here lies the mechanical detritus reflecting the former “lives” of automobiles whose owner’s egos came also to rest, metaphorically, in oily ignoble graveyards.
Flatcolor Gallery - "The World is Flat: Group Photography Exhibition" From vagabond explorers to urban party freaks Flatcolor's group exhibition “The World is Flat” will focus on how contemporary photographers are documenting their lives, travels and adventures; while sharing with us the discovery of their world through the camera’s lens. “The World is Flat” will feature candid lifestyle photography, street photography, and adventure photography inspired by DIY, zine culture and life lived to the fullest.
Gallery IMA - David Ivan Clark, oil on stainless steel
Greg Kucera Gallery - "I Knew It Was Wrong, But I Did It Anyway" by SuttonBeresCuller and "Recent Etchings" by Martin Puryear
Hall Spassov Gallery - "Face to Face" by Rein de Lege. Few painters live for their art in the manner that Rein de Lege does. The Dutch born painter has lived and worked in Barcelona, Spain for nearly thirty years. Best known for his large and small expressionist faces, the artist has a natural curiosity about his pursuit that drives him to enlist several mediums including experimenting with digital platforms.

Joseph Brooks @ Twilight Gallery
The West Seattle Art Walk ~ Thursday, 11 September from 6-9pm. Selected shows:
Twilight Gallery - "This is Not Abstract" by Joseph Brooks. Line has always been important to me as an artist. A line can produce beauty and decay, express the past and move the mind forward to the future. Line is ultimately the underpinning of my work. Whether I am drawing characters or doing non-representational work, the line is my constant. My non-representational work is an exercise in color, composition, and form. It shows how there can be beauty without being a defined object. What is a sunset if not color and composition? I do not refer to this work as abstract because it is not an abstraction of any form. I strip objects of their familiarity and allow the viewer to make their own connections to the work.
Also check out new work at Arts West, Click! Design That Fits, The Heartland Cafe, Hotwire Coffee, Shadowland, Skylark Cafe, Shoofly Pie, West 5, Wild Rose's, Windermere, and more!

EGO & Jenny Dayton @ Bherd Studios

Bherd Studios - EGO & Jenny Dayton. Ego’s work has a flair for slightly dark, whimsical creepiness, influenced by the macabre sides of tattoo culture, street art, and underground fine art. Dayton creates both paintings and 3-d miniature scenes for this exhibition. Her work is message intense, compassion and respect for animals is the gospel she preaches but she does it quietly. The message is always there, but you have to unfold the layers of the work to see it clearly. Jenny uses images, Cyrillic text and other graphic elements to guide the invested viewer toward an important truth.
Urban Light Studios - "Sci-Fi Collaborative" featuring Casey Brookbush & Derek Ross. This is something special here... A BIG set of SCI-FI themed large scale, dimensional, contour cut, animated RGB LED backlit (via remote control) programable & absolutely EPIC paintings of Star Trek & Star Wars' most classic cruisers; The USS Enterprise, The Millennium Falcon, X-Wing Fighter, an Imperial Walker with frosty backlighting in a frozen glacial landscape on Hoth (!!!) a Klingon Bird of Prey, Vader's Tie-Fighter & much more... Derek & Casey have combined their painting skills into an incredibly unique collaborative collection of electronic SCI-FI theme Industrial art pieces.
Warlock Labs - "Stephen Crowe's Dubliners" To celebrate the hundredth year of Dubliners, James Joyce's classic short story collection, de Selby Press commissioned artist Stephen Crowe to illustrate the stories for a new centennial edition. The SAAM is featuring "Deco Japan: Shaping Art & Culture 1920-1945" Jazz. Gin. Short hair and short skirts. The modern girl. The rise of film, and the advent of skyscrapers and air travel. After World War I, the world was changing rapidly. With the machine age came an increased emphasis on speed. The art world answered with Art Deco, which had a driving energy that found expression in its use of themes from cultures all over the world, wild appropriation of other art forms, and graphic designs with fast lines that could be adapted and used on everything from housewares to posters, and for everything from politics to advertising. By World War II, Art Deco had left its mark on almost every medium of visual art.Through 19 October. (from www.seattleartmuseum.org)

Mark Tobey @ SAM

The SAM is currently featuring a multitude of exhibits! Check out:
"Modernism in the Pacific Northwest: The Mythic and the Mystical." Meet the mystics—the four artists who, in the late 1930s and ‘40s, became known as the Northwest School of modern art. Fed by one another’s passions and talents, Mark Tobey, Morris Graves, Kenneth Callahan, and Guy Anderson sought to create art that consciously responded to the world events around them. All saw art as a form of spiritual quest. All were influenced by the Northwest’s swirling mix of Native American and Asian traditions. Soon, they were known in New York and across the country—regional artists whose visions, for a time, were universal. Show runs thru 7 September.
"City Dwellers: Contemporary Art from India" Bollywood movie culture, venerated politicians, religious traditions, and art historical icons all contribute to the myriad of influences in contemporary urban Indian culture. The artists in this exhibition pay tribute to this multitude even as they introduce elements of irony, introspection, and critique. Through their photography and sculpture, the artists negotiate diverse ideas and influences on contemporary Indian society—Hindu mythology, Bollywood movies, Indian and western art, and icons of everyday life in a global market economy. Many of the works are influenced as much by popular movie culture and the use of digital technology as by the conventions of religious ritual and street processions, traditional theater, and dance. Come see the colorful, contradictory, and complex India of today through the works of some of the country’s leading artists. Show runs thru 15 February 2015.

Ken Price @ the Henry
The Henry Art Gallery is currently hosting "Inside/Outside" by Ken Price in the North Galleries. The Henry is pleased to present a focused exhibition of works by Ken Price (U.S., 1935 – 2012) dating from the late 1970s to the mid 1990s from the Henry’s permanent collection. Central to the exhibition is Heat Wave, a portfolio of prints developed in conjunction with Black Sparrow Graphic Arts that illustrates a compilation of poems by prolific poet and fiction writer Charles Bukowski (U.S., born Germany 1920 – 1994). The portfolio was produced in 1995, a year after Bukowski’s death and is comprised of 15 prints on paper in an edition of 170. Widely considered a cult hero, in his writing Charles Bukowski depicted the depravity of American urban life, leading Time magazine to call him “the laureate of American lowlife” in the late 1980s. The other works included in the exhibition highlight aspects of Ken Price’s figurative production, as well as his long-standing investment in ceramics, drawing, and print-making. The pieces are tightly framed, everyday representations of urban and rural scenes, rendered in a playful and colorful manner. They recall cartoons or graphic novels, appearing familiar at first, but uncanny upon closer inspection. A Los Angeles-based artist, Ken Price is known primarily as a sculptor and a printmaker. He is also widely recognized for his abstract large-scale ceramic sculptures. (from henryart.org)

The Frye Art Museum is featuring Isamu Noguchi and Qi Baishi: Beijing 1930. This exhibition brings together for the first time the work of two of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, Isamu Noguchi (American, 1904-1988) and Qi Baishi (Chinese, 1864-1957). Comprising drawings, ink paintings, calligraphic works, and sculptures from the University of Michigan Museum of Art, the Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum, and private and public collections, it presents forty-three works by Noguchi and twenty-three by Qi Baishi. The exhibition and its accompanying publication document the period of six months that Noguchi spent in Beijing and shed new light on the little-known relationship between the two artists. (from fryemuseum.org)  The Frye also hosts an art lecture series every Thursday night.

With this much going on, you couldn't possibly complain that there's nothing to do in Seattle!

Support your local art scene! Cheers.
