LAST CHANCE:
"MLLE X" by Hanna Myers at Twilight Gallery. The MLLE X exhibition arose from the artist's recent personal struggle with coinciding mental and physical illness. Myers was inspired to create work that explored the experience of realizing how little control we as individuals possess over our biology, and how devastating that realization can be. Myers used the the story of Mademoiselle X, an anonymized woman from history who was incapable of reconciling her physical and mental selves into one being, as a filter for better understanding her own internal struggles.

The Piranha Shop - "Works on Paper: A Print Show by Electric Coffin" We are excited to host this print show from Electric Coffin. It's a great show to grab someone a great gift for the holidays. This collection of new work is comprised of imagery, color palettes, tools and resources we use in the studio daily. It was an exercise in taking what objects and tools surround us and configuring those pieces into collaborative compositions. Each series is a study on utilizing our own detritus and recycling it into something new. As a process driven studio, the narrative defines the work we create as we navigate through multiple disciplines. Applying that process to the concept of a “Print Show” has lead us to producing several series of unique multiples, each series serves more as a family or suggestion and each print within that family retains it’s own identity. The result is a print show with hundreds of originals to choose from. The show opens at 6pm at The Piranha Shop. Prints will be hung throughout the gallery and prints will be removed from the wall upon purchase, so come early! There will be editions of 1 and editions of 20, prices will range between $40-$150.
Roq La Rue - "Charismatic Megafauna", group show. Celebrating the magnificent beauty of some of the world’s largest and most spectacular species. Mankind’s fascination with the surrounding wilderness began over 30,000 years ago, leaving stories painted on rocks and caves throughout the world in Indonesia, Africa, Australia, Europe, and the Americas. The grace, beauty, and mysticism of our earth’s beasts continue to amaze, fascinate, and compel us today. From majestic wolves to powerful tigers and elephants, this year-end show explores the many different and fantastical ways contemporary artists draw inspiration and beauty from the animal kingdom.

West Seattle Wine Cellars - "Arborist" by Rachel Setzer. Everyone can be redeemed. With the right ingredients, some love, compassion, and time anything and anyone can be made beautiful again no matter how far down they have been destroyed. The Arborist series began as an exercise in making something pretty. Soon it began to give me peace and refuge from my other responsibilities, and I took the opportunity to hide in paintings of trees that reminded me of easier times. Then, it took on a brand new life when I combined Arborist with a newly discovered love of making my own paper by hand.

CoCA at Rubix featuring Bo Choi, Thursday, 10 December from 6-9pm. We are pleased to present installation and fiber artist, Bo Choi, at our gallery space at Rubix from December 3 through January 9, with an opportunity to meet the artist during Capitol Hill art walk on December 10. Bo, who participated in our recent 24 Hour Art Marathon, is an innovative fashion designer and artist. Her fashion line merges with installation art as she explores and transgresses the ways a body interacts with clothing. Bo challenges concepts of freedom and form, and we are amazed at her unconventional use of men’s underwear and plastic bags. Bo has exhibited locally and internationally and completed residencies in Germany and Korea. She currently teaches fashion design at Sanford-Brown College (Seattle) and computer graphic at North Seattle College. Bo is represented by Gallery IMA in Seattle and holds an MFA from the University of Washington.

"Jeffrey Mitchell's Turn" 4th Tuesdays at Joe Bar. Tuesday, 22 December at Joe Bar from 6.30-9.30pm. The 7th installment in this inaugural series is coming up. Stay tuned! TURN is a year-long collaborative exhibition platform, where twelve artists take turns transforming a single piece. To start, one artist is selected to create a piece for opening night. Each ensuing artist takes it for one month, shows their progress for one evening, then hands it off. Changes to the piece may be made to any degree, so long as some physical or aesthetic part of what's received remains. During these monthly exhibitions, when the indefinite work comes into focus, the exhibiting artist proposes a title and a conclusion to the finished piece. What do we call it? What do we do with it when we're done? At the end of the final exhibition, a title and a conclusion are chosen. Finishing the process, one last gathering is held to deliver the piece to its chance destination. Created by Shaun Kardinal.

The SAAM is currently featuring:
"Conceal/Reveal: Making Meaning in Chinese Art" (20 December 2014 - 14 February 2016). This exhibition shows that Chinese artists traditionally employ different approaches to construct layered meanings in an indirect but intriguing way: using one motif to represent another, either through their literary associations or shared pronunciations (homophones); playing with mediums such as using contemporary ceramics to imitate ancient lacquerware; or the pretext of metaphors to make social or political commentaries. This purposeful layering by the artist invites the viewer to mentally peel the layers and reveal the embedded meanings.
The SAM is currently featuring:
"Intimate Impressionism" (1 October 2015 - 10 January 2016). The collection is comprised of extraordinary paintings, considered to be the jewels of one of the finest collections of French Impressionism in the world. This exhibition features 68 intimately scaled paintings by Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masters, including Edouard Manet, Auguste Renoir, Claude Monet, Eugène Boudin, Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, Camille Pissarro, Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard, Paul Gauguin, and Vincent van Gogh, among others. These works, which are prominently presented in the East Building of the National Gallery, have long been treasured by the museum’s visitors and prized by art historians.
"Rebel Rebel" (29 August - 29 December). Potent rebuttals against female stereotypes by women artists are front and center in this installation. Starting in the 1960s in the wake of the feminist movement, women artists rebelled against clichés—notably the image of the seductive Eve and the persistent proclamation of male power and genius. Still a pressing issue today, younger artists represent women and their work in visual refutations that range from punchy to lyrical. Male critiques of traditional gender roles are also on view: a version of a gay pioneer couple is included in a set of dinner plates, and a patchwork quilt dedicated to Glacier National Park deflates expectations of the great outdoors as an arena for male machismo.
"New Light" by Steven Maslach (10 October 2015 - 7 February 2016). Bainbridge Island Glass artist Steven Maslach is featured in a solo show with a survey of large-scale cast glass, wood and mixed media sculptures. New Light refers to his recent development of a unique means of coloring thick, clear glass. Also featured in the exhibition are examples of his older work which use more conventionally colored glass.
"A Story Place" by Nancy Thorne Chambers (10 October 2015 - 7 February 2016). A Story Place is an enchanting ceramic installation featuring thirty life-size animals and insects sitting intently in a forest, listening to a child reading a story—a story that is curiously about them. A Story Place is a visual feast that speaks volumes about the simple but very complex idea of "relationship." Creating a sense of "story" within "visual relationships" is what inspires clay artist Nancy Thorne Chambers. Each sculpture is hand-built, fired, glazed, fired again then painted with layers of color to enhance depth to hair and fur. Every gesture, expression, clothing color and finish is carefully chosen both artistically and with relationship to their group setting. Nancy is a former family therapist from Olympia.

With this much going on, you couldn't possibly complain that there's nothing to do in Seattle!
Support your local art scene! Cheers.
