As some of you know, both locations of Trabant Coffee have been sold. They will remain coffee shops for the time being, but the new owners are no longer interested in participating in local art walks as of September. I'm really bummed, since I have been curating at Trabant for over 2 years, we've had some wonderful shows in both spaces, and I had some kick-ass exhibits booked over the next few months. I have contacted the affected artists, and have thankfully been able to reschedule to my other curatorial venues as necessary. But it's still frustrating, as the loss of these 2 venues limits my ability to bring the work of artists I admire into the public view. So... I will be actively looking for new art spaces in which to exhibit awesome things. If anyone knows of a space that's in need of a curator, please let me know. "New Works" by Madeline Court at Ghost Gallery. 1 weekend only! Saturday & Sunday, 5-6 September. Ghost Gallery presents a special weekend exhibit featuring new ceramic and mixed media work by Seattle artist Madeline Courtney. Join us for an Artist Reception Sat, Sept. 5th from 5-8pm. Madeline Courtney approaches form with an improvisational and playful tone. Her goal is to create objects that question their own static natures, capturing a sense of the immediate and unexpected. Much of the work is inspired by historical objects of ceremony—from Chinese Bronze Age sculptures to the 19th Century Natural History Museum.

Artifact Gallery - "It's Been a Long Summer" by John Sarkis. It's been a long summer people. Luckily we had John Sarkis to capture it for us. Through spray paint, acrylic, oil, house paint and varnish, Sarkis documents a summer spent soaking sun, lighting firecrackers, smelling flowers and dancing all night. Sarkis’ new work highlights the dissipated affair through bent truths and layers of paint, melting figures and tropical still lifes.
AXIS Pioneer Square - "Prints: New Paintings by Troy Gua" In his new series of original paintings, titled 'Prints' (a coy nod to his hero Prince and his storied ongoing project, 'Le Petit Prince'), Troy returns to painting with his meticulous acrylic on canvas handiwork - something he moved away from with his digitally composed and printed limited edition Pop Hybrids series, which, incidentally, also began as a series of paintings. These new works show repeated patterns based on Troy’s own fabric print designs, filled with images of familiar novelty and unexpected symbolism. They are 36" square format swatches of iconography in a wry style most easily attributed to a textile print: something machine made. These are themes that Troy returns to time and again: the tensions between man made and machine made, between what we do and do not consider art.

Flatcolor Gallery - "Strange Waves: A Psychedelic Group Exhibit". "Strange Waves" features artwork spanning the gamut of psychedelic experiences from alternate realities and out of body experiences to lucid dream states and vivid hallucinations. Take a trip through the unique perspectives and bizarre visions of some of our favorite mind-altering artists in this group exhibition by Flatcolor, the gallery who first took you through the vortex with “Round Trip” back in August 2011. Sit back, relax and ride the Strange Waves into another consciousness.
Roq La Rue - "We Are the Flood" by Brad Woodfin & "Drift" by Clair Johnson. Painted in rich dark tones, Woodfin’s animal studies emerge from the blackness like ghosts, appearing to us for a brief moment before they fade away. His painterliness articulates itself in a nearly hyperrealistic presentation, but upon closer look the soft expressiveness of his brushwork reveals the hand of the artist in each carefully painted hoof, fin, or feather. In her new series of stunning aerial landscape paintings, Johnson explores contour, pattern, and color formed either by nature or human intervention across the earth's surface. Her luscious paintings reveal intricately branching systems of mountain ridges and meandering river-pathways; linking distant parts or places aren't obviously connected at first glance.

Treason Gallery - Grand opening!!! "Luminous" by Eryn Boone. TREASON Gallery's grand opening exhibition will feature artist Eryn Boone. Boone is known primarily for her vibrant, colorful translations of sacred geometry, which will be the focus of her exhibition at the gallery, "Luminous". Using her own mixture of Gouache, Boone paints in a number of sizes and formats. Whether it be large pieces or small, paper or canvas, she never ceases to amaze her viewers and completely encapsulate them in her visions.

Calypte Gallery - Eve Cohen & Sonja Peterson. Bedtime Stories is a kingdom of hybrids and misfits sculpted from panty hose, porcelain, seedpods and paper goods. The crafting process becomes a kind of biology where character and purpose is revealed. Objects become costumes, costumes become creatures and a history is revealed via posture, expression and detail. This is a world conjured from dreams, songs and folklore.
Chroma Clouds Gallery - Rich M Stevens. Rich Stevens work uses many layers and mediums including paint, ink, foil, string, and resin. His work uses layers and layers that create 3D depth that can only be truly appreciated in person. Chroma Clouds is an art gallery in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood located inside Beyond Vape Capitol Hill. The gallery is curated by Seattle artist Ten Hundred.
The Factory - Rodrigo Valenzuela. Back in March when Rodrigo Valenzuela heard we were opening the Factory, he immediately asked for a show. Why give him a show when he'd just wrapped up a solo exhibit at Frye Art Museum? "I want to show work in Seattle that no one else will want to show or buy," he said. So the Factory presents Valenzuela's Seattle debut of a body of large-scale works that we think—regardless of what he says—are fucking cool. To make the series, Valenzuela appropriated the iconography of labor unions from around the world, creating fantastical, larger-than-life, screen-printed flags made with raw canvas and house paint from Home Depot.
Ghost Gallery - "Trans{mission}" by Amber Anderson. Ghost Gallery presents a new series of encaustic paintings by Seattle artist & art conservator Amber R. Anderson - Combining print-making techniques, exploring concepts of physical energy (in scientifically traditional terms: kinetic, mechanical work, mechanical wave, resting potential), & the transfer exchange of energy from one entity to another.

CoCA @ Equinox Studios - "UN[contained]" by Nat Evans. Center on Contemporary Art (CoCA) is proud to present Seattle-based sound artist and composer Nat Evans’ second immersive installation, That Summer, at CoCA UN[contained]. Located in the Container Village in the heart of the growing Equinox Creative Industrial Complex and Studios, our interim space UN[contained] will feature a variety of multi-disciplinary artists over the coming months with special events to coincide with Georgetown Art Attack, the neighborhood’s popular monthly art walk.
Equinox Studios - "ArtBridge Reception" for Celeste Cooning & Katie Miller. Thanks to generous support from RBC Wealth Management and Chihuly Garden and Glass, two Fellowships were awarded by jury in 2014 to support the emergent voices of artists Celeste Cooning and Katie Miller. Their Fellowship year culminates with an exhibition of two site-specific installations on view at Equinox Studios beginning August 28 through September 13, 2015. A closing reception is scheduled for Saturday, September 12 in conjunction with the Georgetown Art Walk.
Interstitial - "Inverse Light & Chamber" by Patryk Stasieczek. "Inverse Light and Chamber" explores the breakdown of photographic composition. Artist Patryk Stasieczek uses the techniques of photography to transmit the experience of an image back into the gallery, which becomes saturated in the negative of an original exposure, formulating an examination of gesture, objects, and space. In a direct response to Interstitial's unique layout, Inverse Light and Chamber transforms the room into a site where the material production of photography and the resulting visual composition are combined. Using colored light in a wide variety of formats, Stasieczek allows the viewer to experience the gallery space as image and the viewer as camera. The room is dark, the eyes adjust, the edges articulate, and the work is engaged.
Krab Jab Studio - "Level Up" by Randy Gallegos. Game illustrator and imaginary realist Randy Gallegos has put together a show of works entitled "Level Up", which explores Randy's lifetime relationship to the game industry, from playing his very first home video game console as a child (we all can relate to that) to his professional career as a successful game illustrator for Wizards of the Coast/Hasbro, Topps, White Wolf, and more. This exhibit features paintings and drawings of both his traditional figurative work as well as a series devoted to his passion for video games called "Hearts for Hardware".

Urban Light Studios - Opening reception: "Tales Untold" by Kindra Nikole & Isobelle Ouzman. Kindra Nikole and Isobelle Ouzman bring the fantastical to life on a regular basis. CoCA @ Equinox Studios - "UN[contained]" by Nat Evans. Center on Contemporary Art (CoCA) is proud to present Seattle-based sound artist and composer Nat Evans’ second immersive installation, That Summer, at CoCA UN[contained]. Located in the Container Village in the heart of the growing Equinox Creative Industrial Complex and Studios, our interim space UN[contained] will feature a variety of multi-disciplinary artists over the coming months with special events to coincide with Georgetown Art Attack, the neighborhood’s popular monthly art walk.
Equinox Studios - "ArtBridge Reception" for Celeste Cooning & Katie Miller. Thanks to generous support from RBC Wealth Management and Chihuly Garden and Glass, two Fellowships were awarded by jury in 2014 to support the emergent voices of artists Celeste Cooning and Katie Miller. Their Fellowship year culminates with an exhibition of two site-specific installations on view at Equinox Studios beginning August 28 through September 13, 2015. A closing reception is scheduled for Saturday, September 12 in conjunction with the Georgetown Art Walk.
Interstitial - "Inverse Light & Chamber" by Patryk Stasieczek. "Inverse Light and Chamber" explores the breakdown of photographic composition. Artist Patryk Stasieczek uses the techniques of photography to transmit the experience of an image back into the gallery, which becomes saturated in the negative of an original exposure, formulating an examination of gesture, objects, and space. In a direct response to Interstitial's unique layout, Inverse Light and Chamber transforms the room into a site where the material production of photography and the resulting visual composition are combined. Using colored light in a wide variety of formats, Stasieczek allows the viewer to experience the gallery space as image and the viewer as camera. The room is dark, the eyes adjust, the edges articulate, and the work is engaged.
Krab Jab Studio - "Level Up" by Randy Gallegos. Game illustrator and imaginary realist Randy Gallegos has put together a show of works entitled "Level Up", which explores Randy's lifetime relationship to the game industry, from playing his very first home video game console as a child (we all can relate to that) to his professional career as a successful game illustrator for Wizards of the Coast/Hasbro, Topps, White Wolf, and more. This exhibit features paintings and drawings of both his traditional figurative work as well as a series devoted to his passion for video games called "Hearts for Hardware".

"A Lovelorn Theft" by Kari-Lise Alexander at Modern Eden Gallery in San Francisco, CA. Opening reception: Saturday, 12 September from 6-9pm. If you're in the San Francisco area this month, check out this Seattle artist's solo show! A Lovelorn Theft is inspired by tales of swan maidens and
selkies of Nordic folklore. This series features mysterious and beautiful
creatures that shapeshift by shedding their animal skin into the form of human
women. Each piece within A Lovelorn Theft freezes a moment in time, placing the
viewer in the role of a lovelorn voyeur, who spies these beautiful creatures
for the first time. The artist’s careful attention to detail and adept
brushwork describe subjects that are ethereal and otherworldly, yet rendered to
a specificity that begs temptation. With a historical nod to the
Pre-Raphaelites and painters of the Victorian avant-garde, Kari-Lise Alexander
debuts a striking new series rooted in Norse mythology and the mysteries of the
heart.

"Rebirth of the World" by Chiho Aoshima. (2 May - 4 October) Welcome to the fantastic world of Chiho Aoshima. This might just be our future. Who’s to say that as technology advances, as natural disasters rise, as the organic world blends with the manmade, that smartphones will not become smart buildings? That skyscrapers will not stand up and walk among mountains? That ghosts and spirits don’t already float through our world? Aoshima’s work has undeniably dark images but a positive attitude. There’s no evidence of fear in her art. Her murals, digital prints, and drawings don’t want to escape from society or from the future. Instead, she seems to embrace all possibilities, including a world where the skeletons and ghosts reside alongside the rest of us. Her work may look like a surreal fantasy. But ask Aoshima, and she’ll tell you she’s showing us the reality that our beautifully chaotic world may be hurtling toward.

"Place" by John Armstrong, Mel Curtis & Jennifer Stanton. Where we live, where we've come from, and where we choose to be all help inform our daily experiences and our sense of place in the world. John Armstrong says that his photos "show some of the irony, humor and weirdness of what it's like living in America today." Mel Curtis travels the world – at times with University of Washington student groups – and will have new images based on those travels. Jennifer Stanton's new work "is a series of Acacia trees, which easily lead the mind to the continent of Africa."

The Mesa Gallery presents "Cut & Bent" a group exhibition of art in tin, curated by Bill Bran-Mickle. Tin as an artistic medium is fairly unusual even though it has surrounded us for many decades. With the surge in interest in environmental conservation, it is no wonder artists have found their way to contribute by recycling tins into artistic expression. Maximum Fun is part picnic, part aerobics class, and part community-building event featuring works by Nat Evans, Mario Lemafa, and Elizabeth Spavento. Join us at the UW's Sylvan Theater to traverse mental obstacle courses, jump over things, and shout in unison. Playing off Jesse Thorn's Manifesto for the New Sincerity, Maximum Fun seeks to probe the relationship between sincerity and irony through a series of interactive activities inspired by the legendary Evel Knievel.
"Sanctum" by Juan Pampin & James Coupe (4 May 2013 - 23 August 2015). An interactive art installation, Sanctum employs surveillance systems to generate cinematic narratives with social media content that matches the demographic profile of passers-by. Sanctum seeks to investigate the narrative potential of social media while raising important and provocative questions about the conflicting imperatives emerging in our culture as we promote and embrace ever-more-intrusive electronic media, while still cherishing traditional notions of privacy.

"Structure & Ornament" by Leo Saul Berk, an exhibition which comprises sculptural and video work by Seattle artist Leo Saul Berk, as well as two new site-specific works commissioned by the Museum.
"Andy Warhol: Little Red Book #178" Little Red Book #178 comprises nineteen Polaroids of friends and celebrities, many of whom were involved in the production of Warhol's film L'Amour (1973), which was filmed in Paris in September 1970. L'Amour was written and directed by Warhol and Paul Morrissey. The film starred Warhol superstars Jane Forth and Donna Jordan, French actor Max Delys, and American actor Michael Sklar; the cast also included Peter Greenlaw and fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld.
