PIONEER SQUARE: Rebels, Libations & Illuminations

The Pioneer Square Art Walk is hopping tonight! Awesome things are going down; there's no way I'll be able to catch them all, but I've got to start somewhere...

"The Drawnk Show" at the Pioneer Square Saloon is my first stop. The Drawnk is a migratory evening of drinking & drawing, established in early March and growing ever since. The location & participants change, but the spirit remains the same. The Saloon hosts the group more often than not, and we figured it was time to turn our sketches into a show. Dozens of works by the Drawnk artists are on display, 8" x 8" each, and only $40 a piece! It's a rare opportunity to pick up exceptionally affordable art by some of Seattle's most prolific artists; I have to come home with at least a few... ;)

My next stop is "Face Me" at AXIS Pioneer Square, a collection of portraits featuring Tom Deslongchamp, Erin Pollack & Joe Mac Kechnie curated by Vera Paskevich. Deslongchamp's portraits are created with an unconventional process using Crayola markers & paper cutouts for masking. Pollack's paintings are traditional oils filled with a unique convergence of texture & light. Mac Kechnie's images are a fun mix of representational, expressionistic & abstract. The artists' styles differ dramatically, but the rich colours create a dynamic dialogue between the subjects.

Just down the street from AXIS is Flatcolor Gallery showing artists EGO and Grady Gordon. "The Time is Never" marks EGO's 3rd exhibit at Flatcolor, and his trademark oil and acrylic creations are miniature windows into a detailed world of whimsical horror. In the upstairs gallery, Grady Gordon's series of singularly intricate monoprints "Been Seeing You Around Lately" creates a stark mythological balance to EGO's dark symbolism.

I continue down the road to ArtXchange Gallery which is hosting "Rebels of the Floating World" by Jonathan Wakuda Fischer & Louie Gong. Fischer combines traditions of Japanese folklore, woodblock print, and graffiti while Gong melds the traditional Coast Salish art style with pop culture iconography. The show is a fascinating fusion of cultural heritage and urban street art style.

My next stop is Roq La Rue Gallery for an exhibit unified by light (and its absence). Jeff Jacobson's "Aphotic Ilk" references the strange phosphorescence of deep dark waters where curious life forms abound and light exists as a fleeting, dangerous beauty. Casey Weldon's newest acrylic series "Hastemaker" glows from within; neon vignettes captured in hyper saturated pigments could be fragments of a vivid surreal narrative. "Let Your Eyes Adjust to the Dark" by Samantha Wall is a portrait series in sumi ink, charcoal & pigment featuring women of many ethnicities in monochrome. Wall has created "a place where emotions call out and perceived racial boundaries dissolve."

Next door to Roq la Rue is Surface Theory, host to "Paths Taken," John Osgood's newest body of work, and my last gallery stop of the evening. Osgood has created over 30 paintings in acrylic & aerosol, true to his style, and stream-of-consciousness in nature, the "Paths Taken" series is exactly that: an exploration of textures and layers, images unknown and puzzled together, the final compositions dictated by the process itself.

After leaving Surface Theory, I head back toward the Pioneer Square Saloon to pick up my new art acquisitions from the Drawnk show. On the way, I peek into Artifact Gallery, closed for the night, but well lit and lovely with John Sarkis' "It's Been a Long Summer" show. I also pass a series of large-scale paintings chillin' on a street corner. I have no idea whose they are or from whence they came, but it's Pioneer Square on art walk night, so why not?

OCTOBER Art Fix: Upcoming Events

If you need your art fix for the month of October (and I know I do!), here are some shows that you won't want to miss! The harvest season is upon us, and Samhain approaches... The creepy, the monstrous, and the macabre will abound this month, so costume yourself fantastically and go out and haunt an art walk! Candy is dandy, but have you ever tried trick-or-treating for art...?

LAST CHANCE:

Chiho Aoshima @ SAAM
"Rebirth of the World" by Chiho Aoshima at SAAM. Welcome to the fantastic world of Chiho Aoshima. This might just be our future. Who’s to say that as technology advances, as natural disasters rise, as the organic world blends with the manmade, that smartphones will not become smart buildings? That skyscrapers will not stand up and walk among mountains? That ghosts and spirits don’t already float through our world? Aoshima’s work has undeniably dark images but a positive attitude. There’s no evidence of fear in her art. Her murals, digital prints, and drawings don’t want to escape from society or from the future. Instead, she seems to embrace all possibilities, including a world where the skeletons and ghosts reside alongside the rest of us. Her work may look like a surreal fantasy. But ask Aoshima, and she’ll tell you she’s showing us the reality that our beautifully chaotic world may be hurtling toward. Showing through 4 October.

AXIS Pioneer Square - "FACE ME", an exhibition of portraits by Northwest-based artists Tom Deslongchamp, Erin Pollock, and Joe Mac Kechnie.
Core Gallery - "Ghost Practice" by Sara Everett, new mixed media works by Sara Everett, dissecting threads with scissors, spaces with ladders and truths from the lies we tell ourselves.

Roq La Rue - Main Gallery: "Aphotic Ilk" by Jeff "Weirdo" Jacobson & "Hastemaker" by Casey Weldon. Loft Gallery: "Let Your Eyes Adjust to the Dark" by Samantha Wall
Surface Theory - "Paths Taken" by John Osgood. This group of 30 plus new paintings on wood, paper and canvas have been the fruits of my labor over the last year. This year has been the first time in my life that I devoted to a single body of work. In this work I try to find the pieces of the puzzle to build the body that tell a story to the viewer. By a process of layering acrylic paint and letting spray paint gravitate how it may, I build layers and texture on what I paint on. What stays and what gets blocked out is a mystery until I find something that I can relate to and has an interesting composition. This is where the title of this how comes from. The actual paths I take are creative decisions to construct what I think works.
TK Artist Lofts - "Conductive Garboil Grant Party" Come celebrate the 2015 recipient of the Conductive Garboil Grant! Founder Su Job strongly believed in marking life’s milestones with celebration. We invite you to join us for an evening of revelry featuring the award presentation, special exhibitions, music, hors d'oeuvres, and beverages. The Conductive Garboil grant is awarded yearly to an artist with a connection to Pioneer Square who has demonstrated a profound ability to challenge the limits of conductive creative discourse and its effects on our society, pushing the creative act beyond the accepted limits, definitions, or purposes of art while engaging audiences outside the aesthetic industrial complex. It is administered by a unique partnership between The Estate of Su Job, 4Culture, and Artist Trust. Stay tuned for the announcement of this year’s awardee.

Known for her cross-examination of beauty with that which is often regarded as macabre, assemblage artist Anita Arora studies human nature and the parallels that manifest in not only the history of medicine and science but the complexities that make us who we are. What results are delightfully creepy, aesthetically pleasing shadow boxes. The tools of her trade include bones, rusty nails, antique medical illustrations, apothecary, memento mori and countless curiosities that come into her possession. Whether she’s capturing a young girl’s solitude on a windy ferry deck, the uninhibited glee of a dog on a car ride, or the elevated perspective gained by donning a high-fashion hat, Sally’s work encapsulates the poignant, amusing business of living with great style and deep affection. Also, "Debutantes" group show. Twelve of our newest artists make their big exhibition debuts! "Sojurns" by Alicia Tormey at Hall/Spassov Gallery in Bellvue. Friday, 2 October from 6-9pm. Alicia Tormey is a force. Innovation within a proven discipline is rare. That is to say that many artists are unable or not willing to evolve or expound on an idea that has been tested and proven true. This is not the case for Tormey. Since we awoke to this artists work she has expanded on early success, shifted her color palate and become more fervent in her quest for perfection. For this, the artist’s 2014 exhibition sold out. Observers, whether familiar with the artist’s work or not, are able to speak the language in which her work is completed. It resonates with our desire for nature conjures up the likeness of landscape and mimics flora with the fascination of child just aware of their surroundings. It does this while tethered to abstraction and bewildering us with unmatched technical ability. Tormey’s approach and professionalism is a model for all artists and the reason we believe her to be among the top three Encaustic painters in America today.

Each painting is the artists’ interpretation of a unique ValYou. Eben Tobias Greene, the founder of creative change agency, United Creations, illustrated 49 symbols and categorized them into 7 groups. The themes are Foundation, Inspiration, Transformation, Mastery, Connection, Transcendence and Realization. Eben then invited 7 artists to paint alongside him, 7 paintings each, while he paints all 49. All 98 originals will be shown for the first time in the Sub-T Room at Art/Not Terminal Gallery on the first Saturday in October, 2015.

Georgetown Liquor Company - The Art of Eli Wolff
Krab Jab Studio - "The Three Impostors" by Bastien Lecouffe Deharme, Marcela Bolivar & Samuel ArayaAs the harvest moon descends upon us, three artists are releasing their new body of work a much anticipated show in the historic amphitheater of Seattle known as Georgetown, in a gallery tucked in an old brick brewery plant. The artists came together this year to weave this show together as The Three Impostors, and the result is as intense, disturbing and sensuous as its literary predecessor. Loosely based on the novel of the same name, the art is dark. It’s not meant for those who do not seek to understand the mysteries of our pagan past. The images are riddled with symbolism, and the female figure is our guide into the abyss of dreams. She is solemn, sometimes melancholy, and even rife with arrows she is never our victim, she isn’t ever ours to contain, to keep. The three artists make this very clear, and the message is well received.

ONGOING:

The SAAM is currently featuring:
"Conceal/Reveal: Making Meaning in Chinese Art" (20 December 2014 - 14 February 2016). This exhibition shows that Chinese artists traditionally employ different approaches to construct layered meanings in an indirect but intriguing way: using one motif to represent another, either through their literary associations or shared pronunciations (homophones); playing with mediums such as using contemporary ceramics to imitate ancient lacquerware; or the pretext of metaphors to make social or political commentaries. This purposeful layering by the artist invites the viewer to mentally peel the layers and reveal the embedded meanings.

The SAM is currently featuring:
"Intimate Impressionism" (1 October 2015 - 10 January 2016). The collection is comprised of extraordinary paintings, considered to be the jewels of one of the finest collections of French Impressionism in the world. This exhibition features 68 intimately scaled paintings by Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masters, including Edouard Manet, Auguste Renoir, Claude Monet, Eugène Boudin, Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, Camille Pissarro, Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard, Paul Gauguin, and Vincent van Gogh, among others. These works, which are prominently presented in the East Building of the National Gallery, have long been treasured by the museum’s visitors and prized by art historians.
"Rebel Rebel" (29 August - 29 December). Potent rebuttals against female stereotypes by women artists are front and center in this installation. Starting in the 1960s in the wake of the feminist movement, women artists rebelled against clichés—notably the image of the seductive Eve and the persistent proclamation of male power and genius. Still a pressing issue today, younger artists represent women and their work in visual refutations that range from punchy to lyrical. Male critiques of traditional gender roles are also on view: a version of a gay pioneer couple is included in a set of dinner plates, and a patchwork quilt dedicated to Glacier National Park deflates expectations of the great outdoors as an arena for male machismo.

Bainbridge Island Museum of Art is currently featuring:
"New Light" by Steven Maslach (10 October 2015 - 7 February 2016). Bainbridge Island Glass artist Steven Maslach is featured in a solo show with a survey of large-scale cast glass, wood and mixed media sculptures. New Light refers to his recent development of a unique means of coloring thick, clear glass. Also featured in the exhibition are examples of his older work which use more conventionally colored glass.
"A Story Place" by Nancy Thorne Chambers (10 October 2015 - 7 February 2016). A Story Place is an enchanting ceramic installation featuring thirty life-size animals and insects sitting intently in a forest, listening to a child reading a story—a story that is curiously about them.  A Story Place is a visual feast that speaks volumes about the simple but very complex idea of "relationship." Creating a sense of "story" within "visual relationships" is what inspires clay artist Nancy Thorne Chambers. Each sculpture is hand-built, fired, glazed, fired again then painted with layers of color to enhance depth to hair and fur. Every gesture, expression, clothing color and finish is carefully chosen both artistically and with relationship to their group setting. Nancy is a former family therapist from Olympia.

Wayne Bund @ Gage
Gage Academy of Art is currently featuring:
"Drink & Draw" every 1st Friday from 7-9pm. Each session is based on a theme – a costumed model, still life arrangements, music, videos and more. We’ll provide the drawing materials for free – or just have a cocktail or glass of wine and watch the artists work! No formal instruction is provided, no host bar. Ages 21+ only, please. $10 at the door.

"Sanctum" @ Henry
The Henry Art Gallery is currently featuring:
"Maximum Fun: A New Sincerity Event" Saturday, 13 August at 5pm. Maximum Fun is part picnic, part aerobics class, and part community-building event featuring works by Nat Evans, Mario Lemafa, and Elizabeth Spavento. Join us at the UW's Sylvan Theater to traverse mental obstacle courses, jump over things, and shout in unison. Playing off Jesse Thorn's Manifesto for the New Sincerity, Maximum Fun seeks to probe the relationship between sincerity and irony through a series of interactive activities inspired by the legendary Evel Knievel.
"Sanctum" by Juan Pampin & James Coupe (4 May 2013 - 23 August 2015). An interactive art installation, Sanctum employs surveillance systems to generate cinematic narratives with social media content that matches the demographic profile of passers-by. Sanctum seeks to investigate the narrative potential of social media while raising important and provocative questions about the conflicting imperatives emerging in our culture as we promote and embrace ever-more-intrusive electronic media, while still cherishing traditional notions of privacy.

The Frye Art Museum is currently featuring:
"Structure & Ornament" by Leo Saul Berk, an exhibition which comprises sculptural and video work by Seattle artist Leo Saul Berk, as well as two new site-specific works commissioned by the Museum.
"Andy Warhol: Little Red Book #178" Little Red Book #178 comprises nineteen Polaroids of friends and celebrities, many of whom were involved in the production of Warhol's film L'Amour (1973), which was filmed in Paris in September 1970. L'Amour was written and directed by Warhol and Paul Morrissey. The film starred Warhol superstars Jane Forth and Donna Jordan, French actor Max Delys, and American actor Michael Sklar; the cast also included Peter Greenlaw and fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld.
The Frye also hosts an art lecture series every Thursday night.

With this much going on, you couldn't possibly complain that there's nothing to do in Seattle!

Support your local art scene! Cheers.
